Basem Naim, a senior Hamas political bureau official involved in ceasefire negotiations, told Drop Site News that the movement will not accept unilateral disarmament or total demilitarization of Gaza, arguing that “Palestinian resistance and its weapons are a legitimate right” and that the issue is political, not security based.

Naim said any discussion of weapons can only take place within a long term ceasefire that restrains Israel and a defined political process leading to a Palestinian state and a security force capable of defending it, insisting first on full implementation of the initial ceasefire terms and a fundamental improvement in Gaza’s humanitarian conditions. He noted that Hamas has previously proposed freezing or storing certain weapons under Palestinian, Arab, and international supervision as part of a mutually enforced truce, rather than surrendering them outright.

His comments come as Trump and Netanyahu renew demands for “full and immediate demilitarization” as a condition for reconstruction, with Netanyahu insisting even small arms must be surrendered before any Israeli withdrawal. Separately, Netanyahu aide and Israeli cabinet secretary Yossi Fuchs claimed Israel is preparing for a roughly 60-day period, at Washington’s request, to force disarmament before a renewed large scale assault, saying that if it fails the Israeli army would “return and complete the mission,” and suggesting that if disarmament does not happen by June, Israel could resume its genocidal war on Gaza.
