A $6 spring loaded hinge has saved me $60 so far this year on HVAC costs. I've always been bad at closing my basement door, never really thought anything of it and didn't expect any sort of major HVAC usage decrease if I did. Recently, I bought a couple spring loaded hinge for another project and added one of them to my basement door. If my thermostat's app is right, I've been using 20% less HVAC these last couple months since I installed the hinge. While the basement is a bit warmer that it was, it's no longer significantly colder than upstairs. |
