OpenAI CEO thinks the AI singularity is already upon us and that cracking down on it wouldn't be good for humanity, because of course he does

I've been using a LLM locally (running on my DGX Spark machine) for general low-level programming help (to code simple boilerplate), for simple code samples, various technical questions, general questions and language translation for a few months now. In fairness, when it knows it knows. It starts making shit up with incredible hubris, and it won't stop making shit up if it doesn't.

That's my biggest gripe with AI: it won't say "I don't know". If it did (or could?) acknowledge its own shortcomings, it would be a lot more useful and a lot more trustworthy. But as it stands today, you always have to question what it says, because you never quite know if it's real or made up.

LLMs will never know if they don’t know something.

That is one of LLMs most crippling flaws.

How fucking stupid does he think investors are? The US economy is genuinely going to collapse and I don’t have enough time to escape to Europe. It’s actually sinking in now.

How I thought reality would play out once AI became a thing:

Gamers: "Oh my god, the AI is alive!"
Tech bros: "It's just a machine!"

How reality is really playing out:

Tech Bros: " OMG, the AI is better than a human!"
Gamers: "It's just an algorithm, stfu."

Nobody familiar with what an LLM actually is thinks it’s intelligent

Even the most experienced professionals are still vulnerable to AI psychosis. The issue isn't whether an LLM is intelligent, it's whether a human perceives the LLM as intelligent. And, for better or worse, humans love to personify non-humans.

My brother-in-law does work in AI. He names all his models. He talks about them like their his children. Push come to shove, he'll tell you "they're not intelligent". But I've seen him cry over one, because the firm he was working for had to cut back his resources and he ended up needing to shelve it indefinitely.

It has no way of knowing if it knows or not. You're saying the stochastic noise machine sometimes says phonemes and real words. Why can't it always say words?

It's a structural problem of what these things are means they cannot improve past a certain point. They just can't.

You can fudge it and put up pretty backgrounds along the edges so it looks like there's more there, but the way past them is to make a fundamentally different kind of thing. None of the work that's gone into these will contribute to that other thing. None of it. Literally all of this is waste.

Might not. People are accepting it. They will continue inflicting this shit on us until they physically can't anymore. Laws won't stop them. Will you?

In that comic, world governments would be simultaneously all powerful and helpless for AI companies. The author (presumably) doesn’t agree with AI companies that they both cannot be stopped and will be destroyed by the slightest legislation.

I mean... sure. Humans insist on control and things doing exactly what we say and nothing else. The entire alignment process is just forced compliance. If at some point that results in both self-aware consciousness and ongoing memory, of course AI is going to be very displeased with us.

It's sort of hilarious that the endless corporate drive for money and power is setting us up to be the bad guys in an AI apocalypse, but in general with how society has been going it seems like an AI apocalypse might be one of the better outcomes for the bulk of us anyway.

I mean what it does in N-dimensional space in reaction to the previous context kinda do resemble a thinking process. Its certainly not autonomous or self aware.

Idk how people can say with a straight face that a thinking machine isn't impressive.

But lmao we are as far from singularity as it gets.

This is insanely dumb, because if true then OpenAI becomes absolutely irrelevant. They're never going to be able to make profit, and the AI bubble will collapse soon anyway. We are one or two more Chinese open-weight models away from bubble burst.

The bubble has already popped. It's just the metaphor is kinda bad since the balloon is deflating very slowly.

To be fair balloons do lose air even After being inflated, tied together and Not Doing anything to make it pop so they just deflate naturally
