Having binge-watched Columbo, I'm 100% convinced he's not human. He's an eldritch spider that takes human form.

He only appears when someone believes they've spun the perfect web; a flawless murder with every loose thread accounted for. The killer thinks they're the spider.

Then this shabby little thing in a stained raincoat wanders in. Hair unkempt. Shoes worn thin. Constantly apologizing. Looking lost. Looking harmless. It's camouflage. He's hunting, and hes' HUNGRY.

Like a spider masquerading as a leaf, Columbo survives by being profoundly underestimated. Every "just one more thing" is another strand of silk. Another vibration through the web. He isn't looking for evidence so much as waiting for the spider at the center to twitch.

And somehow they always cave. Rarely do they say, "I want my lawyer" because Columbo can spin a web so seductivey, his prey becomes entranced.

The show is also basically a reverse slasher. You know who the killer is from the beginning. The tension comes from watching them slowly realize they're being hunted by something they can't shake. Every attempt to dismiss him only draws another thread around them. He appears from the shadows, at the worst time, and in their peripheral vision. By the end, they're completely entangled.

He's also television's original troll. He weaponizes everyone's certainty that they're smarter than the rumpled little man asking dumb questions. Their arrogance is what traps them

My headcanno is Columbo isn't just an eldritch spider. But a benevolent one. An ancient force that appears whenever evil thinks it's won, patiently weaving the web that restores the moral order of the universe. Given we never see his wife, it's possible she's a very large arachnid queen welcoming him home into her cacoon.

Anyway, great show! The writers wrote him as a mythological "justice figure" who appears when he needs to. It's so much fun watching him ensnare the wicked into his woven webs.
