In 2024, top officials at the University of Alberta were deliberating about how to deal with a student encampment, one of dozens popping up around the country in response to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

After locking down campus buildings, they shared an update with a network of other universities planning similar responses—on one condition: keep this “absolutely secret.”
