A month ago I posted early numbers from a small beta I've been building that tracks what you play across retro handhelds. The beta has since grown from ~30 to ~70 people, and the numbers got a lot more interesting.

So far, collectively: 1,367 different games tracked across 67 different handhelds, and over 2,600 hours of play across 2,295 sessions. More than 1,000 of those hours came in the last month alone. Same caveat as last time: some of this is lifetime history that syncs in when people first connect a handheld, but it's all real play.

Hours tracked per handheld, with the top 3 games on each:

  • RG35XX Pro (702 hrs): Ace Attorney Investigations, Gyakuten Kenji 2, Valkyrie Profile
  • RG40XXV (483 hrs): Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Land DX
  • RG35XXH (225 hrs): Stardew Valley, Link's Awakening DX, Max Payne
  • RG35XX Plus (179 hrs): Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath, True Lies, Doom Troopers
  • Miyoo Mini Plus (114 hrs): Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Pokémon FireRed, A Link to the Past
  • Miyoo Flip (96 hrs): Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Metal Gear Solid, Evoland
  • Thor (90 hrs): Chrono Trigger, A Link to the Past & Four Swords, Ocarina of Time 3D
  • MagicX One 35 (78 hrs): Pokémon Emerald, Jackie Chan Adventures, Burnout Legends

By OS:

  • muOS: 1,788 hours across 934 sessions
  • Android: 411 hours across 560 sessions
  • SpruceOS: 113 hours across 496 sessions
  • OnionOS: 99 hours across 164 sessions
  • Knulli: 23 hours across 116 sessions (support is new this month)
  • Steam Deck: plugin just released, no stats yet

Some other things I didn't expect in the data:

  • The most-added game isn't a Nintendo classic: it's Tetris, added by 17 players.
  • One player has put 72 hours into Stardew Valley across 59 sessions, all on the same RG35XXH.
  • The oldest game anyone has played is Star Ship from 1977, followed by Space Invaders (1978) and 3-D Tic-Tac-Toe (1979).
  • The most committed player is now 216 games deep, and the runner-up is only 10 behind.

Happy to dig into any of the numbers in the comments.
