At a time when videos of ICE-raids[1] dominate social media, the claim by German chancellor Friedrich Merz that 80 percent of Syrians should leave Germany over the coming years has struck a raw nerve. At the same time, the pace of shocking headlines has become relentless: the intervals between them are so short that each is quickly swiped off the screen, as we brace ourselves for the next. What lingers is a diffuse sense of fear.
