your headline is a lie. "not accepting their offer" is not the same as "accepting their offer then just not showing up". to pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

don't get me wrong, this is a bit unhinged but you're overshadowing a good point by clickbait lying right off the bat.

downvote.

Accepting an offer, going through onboarding and then not showing up is very unprofessional. The least you can do is give notice. While it's certainly not OK to publicize this and probably illegal in many jurisdictions, the candidate is clearly also in the wrong here.

I guess they should try to be a better company to work for then. Nobody would bat an eye if a company did it to a new hire, so fuck em. It's one job, chill out.

I can understand being frustrated here but how do you not realize how much worse you are making it by making this post?

This is going to happen every once in a while, every recruiter, hiring manager, and HR professional should know that. If it happens a lot it's because your interview process sucks and you are everyone's last resort if better jobs don't pan out. This happens much less frequently to employers people actually want to work for.

I personally think capitalism can get bent. A few years ago I would have agreed with you, but companies don't give a shit about you. Why should you be required to give more than they do?

This dude ghosted a new job after completing all the steps to onboard. The least he could do is write them an email when he knew he was going to be working somewhere else instead.

When a company lays people off or fires someone, I'm pretty sure they tell them about it

Edit: After reading the screenshot again, it reads like the applicant actually showed up for their first day and then decided against working there. There's def more to.this story than is written here. I'm approaching this as someone with about 15 years of hiring experience who does his best to create a positive work environment, and I've had a couple people ghost me after accepting an offer and taking steps to onboard. I say fuck 'em, and my bad for not catching in the interview that they had that kind of personality. Doesn't make it not a huge pain in the ass for me and everyone I work with

As someone who has hired many people in healthcare, very frankly, anyone who ghosts like this can fucking go to hell. This would extend a position being open sometimes by another month or two and only causes stress for everyone. It's unprofessional as fuck

While firing someone via text message on Friday is absolutely OK.

I'm not in HR, I'm a clinical manager. I've literally never fired someone via text message. I can count the number of people I've fired over 15 years on one hand, and they all saw it coming months in advance and had many opportunities to improve. All employers are not equal

Did you know wage theft is the single greatest body of theft in the US? Larger than all other categories of theft combined. Like they are stealing so much of workers money its bananas. Wild to think about but a good table setter for the topic from my experience imo.

Heaven forbid you have the gall to entertain multiple offers. Just like they have entertained multiple applicants. Sometimes you get staggered offers and one ends up being a better offer later in the game. Are you required to go explain yourself to the lesser offering? Nah. If it's earned sure. Otherwise fuck that.

"Sorry I got something better." Sounds easy but these guys seem like vindictive shits that I'd argue are untrustworthy narrators. Absolutely possible the hiree sent a note but backing out at the last minute that was seen as an absolute betrayal to their seemingly mid offer... This reeks of their thinking they had a big one on the hook for cheap and they are mad it got away.

"Nothing personal it's just business." Is the typical unlubed response to the worker. I fail to see how these thin skinned twats deserve any better, especially with their response here. I'd argue this business deserves the treatment hiring such liabilities in their HR department are clearly bringing them by not dealing with this behavior. Job security for the lawyers I guess.

I understand your point, we should all generally try to be good and respectful to each other. My point is with the imbalance of power in the hiring orocess, propensity for fake interviews we know businesses use, AI use in the interview process, and general lack of respect for the candidates in the pool are all reasons i think you are holding yourself to a standard they refuse. All of these are just the tip of the iceberg of shit in getting a job.

HR and hiring reps do not generally deserve the courtesy unless it's been earned by being exemplary in demonstrated respect and such diring the process. Because for every instance of this, they've likely abused many more people doing similar things to them without blinking an eye. This is just manipulation.

Sure. But if you apply to a 50 people outfit, there are probably no billionaires involved. Just write the email instead of fucking over some poor IT person who just created all your accounts and now has to clean everything up again, or whoever did two hours of overtime to wrap up the actual task they didn't get around to finish due to being informed about a super critical omboarding call 30 minutes before it was supposed to happen. Employees of capitalist companies are still mostly just people suffering the same as we all.

If you applied to the likes of X, or OpenAI etc., feel free to ghost those fuckers as much as you like though. Whoever still works there probably deserves no courtesy. Should also probably do some deep reflection on the application then.

On the other hand, all the companies have a "trial period" where they can kick you any day just because.

Why wouldn't an employee apply the same approach?

For those of you who say the employee is in the wrong, fuck off. When jobs take weeks to initiate the first interview, to the sheer number of interviews, to being passed over and getting to the last interview to be told no, there's zero expectation as a hiring manager that the employee hasn't received multiple offers. You hope that your offer is the best and they decide to join. To those also saying this is an inconvenience to the employer, sure, but that's why you go with the 2nd choice and move forward.

I don't know the employment laws where this person was, but where I am, it's a right to work state. I can quit at any time with zero warning. I can also be fired at any time with zero warning. I used to do hiring, and for someone to get so ass hurt that they publicly shamed the candidate is insane.

It is unprofessional, but the only workplaces that I've seen that happen at have been ones where the pay, benefits and quality of work are so low that they can't expect people to want to work there when they have better options

I live in an ‘at will’ state, this means that either I or my employer can end my employment at any time for any reason. As you can imagine this is both good and wildly abused by employers.

I'll agree that companies deserve notice when they decide to start giving two weeks notice before firing someone.

Since that will never happen, this sort of "it's unprofessional" attitude just makes people look like corpo dicksleeves

I'm surprised this is even news. This is how the India hiring market works. They have 3-month notice periods. And surely during that time they're juggling multiple interviews and job offers.

If that's a problem, hire somewhere else. Or be the best offer.

What's the good part

The good part is that the employer is not afraid of hiring someone. I'm from somewhere where employment is a serious commitment - after some time of employment, it's very, very hard to let someone go.

The consequence is that employers are deadly afraid of getting stuck with someone who is not a good worker, basically forever. It means that salaries stay low, because if you raise a salary you can never bring it down again, and you can't get rid of that worker. It also means that some workers just stop giving a fuck as soon as they get "tenure" and can't be let go anymore.

At will employment has a lot of downsides for the worker, but it also means that no one is afraid of hiring and so that you can easily get a job when you need one.

I'll bet the candidate hadn't signed shit. Very few jobs did I ever have anythig TO sign or any written confirmation the job was mine before the first day of work. The exceptions mostly involved on-the-clock training on company policy and such, and often the pay and department/position to which I would be assigned would STILL be up-in-the-air at that point; still NOTHING in writing to confirm it, and 99% of jobs you still can't be certain what's locked-in until your first paycheck. Had a couple it turned-out they were paying a lower "training" rate during that time, still lower than any 90-day probationary rate or such that had been mentioned.

In what world are we obligated to that?

The world expects us to show up qualified, and we apply for jobs we qualify for, working x machines, processes, what-have you. These ass-holes will gleefully wast weeks of your time on policy questions then have you sweeping a warehouse and running a fork-lift on the opposite end of the campus for a third of the pay. There are companies that are up-front about this and that's another matter. There are plenty more that just lie and act surprised when called on it.

Wow! Looking at job offers from multiple companies, just like companies look at multiple job-seekers, and then changing his mind at the last moment. How would a mere person have the gall to overstep his station in life like this? Workers were meant to beg for jobs, companies were meant to dole them out. Are there no standards anymore?!!

In addition to what the other commenter said it also prevents the employer from obligating you to stay, for instance, by including a provision in your contract that requires notice of your intention cease employment.

It’s worth pointing out that there are no exceptions for anything that would violate state or federal law. Even here you can’t fire somebody for their gender or sexual orientation etc. However, functionally that means the burden of proof is on you to show that you were let go for illegal cause, which can be next to impossible if you aren’t vigilant.

I just had a "restructure" at my work. A good worker with 5 years in the company was told she didn't have a job same day. So, yes, the people are told about it, but not given any time to prepare. She didn't get to finish her shift.
