A lot of survival shows rely on chaotic breakdowns and massive set pieces to show a crew losing their minds. The Terror takes the exact opposite route. It gives us a slow, steady descent into absolute bleakness, and the scariest part is how much restraint the writers exercise. The show never goes overboard with the drama. Most films and television series try to present the poetic side of suffering. They frame trauma as a spiritual journey or a grand cinematic crucible. The Terror show how banal darkness actually is. The suffering on those ships is entirely devoid of romance. Their reality is incredibly dull, dry, and genuinely depressing. I'm a fan of Dan Simmons because of the Hyperion Cantos, but this unglamorous take on despair is gonna live with me for a while. Brilliant, brilliant show and Jared Harris leading a hopeless mission is my new fav genre. |
