When I mean hair loss, I mean HAIR LOSS. Like shedding more than a husky in all seasons kind of hair loss.

Let’s go back to the beginning.

I live in the middle of a lively city. As the VP of sales for a vacuum company, my schedule is packed daily with meetings and dealing with consumers, which I swear is making me age faster than I really am. More often than not you have to deal with people who are looking for arguments as opposed to answers for their problems. That’s when you get really good at telling people they are wrong by saying they are right.

After another day of talking to people nonstop, I dropped my bag near the door, took off my flats, and flopped onto the couch. I almost fell asleep right then and there but my stomach rumbled, reminding me that I needed to feed myself. Reluctantly, I got up and decided I would cook myself some leftovers from last night.

That was when I first noticed it. The food was sizzling on the pan and I was mindlessly stirring it, staring down, zoning out. When my vision refocused, I saw something next to my feet.

I jumped. Hell, I thought it was a giant worm at first. I snuck closer and inspected it.

It was a strand of hair. A very, very long strand of black hair.

Yes, my hair is long but this was abnormally long, like almost the height of me long.

I tried to justify it. Maybe it's the cleaners? A family member stopped by? A break-in?

Wait. A break-in?

I turned off the stove and checked every corner of the house but everything was left exactly like it was when I left. Windows were shut, doors were locked.

With no logical explanation for this anomaly, I picked it up and threw it away.

By the time I finished dinner, it had already left my mind.

I used the few hours left of the day to do some extra work, putting on a podcast in the background and making myself a cup of coffee. After feeling accomplished from finishing a project, I called it a day and went to bed.

I awoke to my nose tickling. Keeping my eyes closed, I rubbed my nose, feeling like I was about to sneeze, and I felt something thin with my fingers. I looked to see what it was.

I pushed myself up and stared at it in a daze. It was another strand of that long hair.

Somehow, one end of it had attached to the ceiling and the other was right in my face.

There was no sensible explanation for this. I didn’t even know what to think. I thought my house was growing hair.

The strand fell with a tug. I threw it away again.

Over the next few days, I started finding hair everywhere. At first, it only appeared on things like my couches, tables, and even on the walls, but then it only escalated from there.

It was wrapped around my toothbrush. It was in my laundry. It was in my food.

Even though I disposed of them, they seemed to be multiplying by the day. I was weirded out and told my friends about it, but they didn’t seem to believe me even with photo evidence. One joked that I should perform an exorcism. I did consider it, but the hair seemed to be largely harmless.

I googled “hair appearing in my house” once and didn’t find anything helpful. Looking back, I probably should’ve done more than try to live with it, but at the time it didn’t feel like a big disruption in my life. I’m not a superstitious person.

I wasn’t sure how to stop this, and eventually I stopped wondering.

On a Saturday about a week and a half after all this started, I had a nice dinner with all my friends, got a bit tipsy and was dropped off by one of my friends. After changing into more comfortable clothes, I decided I wasn’t done drinking quite yet and went into the kitchen to open another bottle of wine. The bottleneck felt cool against my hands as I poured the light liquid into a thin wineglass.

I grabbed a hairband to tie my hair into a bun and sipped on a glass while watching a random show, thinking about how short weekends are and wondering when my next sabbatical was. The wine was good. Sweet. The show was not, though.

I finished up my glass and put away the bottle, not because I was satisfied but because I have self control.

Gathering my pajamas from my room, the idea of a shower was currently very inviting. I made my way over to the bathroom, my bare feet padding against the tiled floor. I set the clothes onto the counter next to the sink and went to the toilet.

I reached over and grabbed the toilet paper, feeling my hair slide across my shoulders. I wiped and pulled my pants up.

Wait. Didn’t I put my hair in a bun?

I reached up and felt my hair curled into a bun, my hairband still tight against my scalp.

Then that means the hair on my shoulders…

That hair isn’t mine.

I looked up.

It stared back at me with big, black eyes.

It was so thin you could see every outline of its skeleton, veins, and blood vessels, but even so its skin looked like it was stretched too tight. Sitting on the ceiling on all fours, its long limbs were splayed out in unnatural ways, almost like a lizard. Its smile stretched too wide, showcasing perfect white teeth, and its eyebrows slanted down like it was angry.

I screamed.

It started laughing, but it slurred like it was speaking in slow motion, making it sound more like a moan.

I ran.

It followed fast behind me, the pitter patter of its movements sounding too close for comfort.

I ripped the front door open with one hand, grabbed the car keys on the nearby shelf with the other, and slammed the door shut behind me barely in time.

It slammed into the door and let out a loud, garbled screech.

I didn’t look back as I ran to the car and sped down the road.

I aimlessly drove for a few minutes, processing what I just saw. Deep in thought, I almost rear ended someone and decided I needed a destination.

So for the past three days, I’ve been staying at my friend’s house.

She was very welcoming when I showed up at her door looking like a mess. I was rambling incoherently and she ushered me inside and sat me down. She made me a cup of hot tea while attempting to calm me down.

I told her everything and I pleaded with her to let me stay for a few days until I figured out what to do. She agreed, probably more out of pity than anything else.

The issue is, I still haven’t figured out what to do.

Yesterday, I drove past my house.

It’s filled with hair from floor to ceiling. Filled so much I swear the windows were about to burst.

So, riddle me this.

What the hell do I do?
