I live in an apartment building where everyone is friendly enough but nobody really talks beyond the usual elevator hello. For the past month I’ve been slowly getting rid of random stuff I don’t use. Old chair, microwave, some shelves, boxes of clothes etc. Instead of throwing everything away I’ve been listing it on Marketplace for like $10 to $30. Apparently my neighbor across the hall noticed strangers constantly showing up, handing me cash, and leaving with pieces of my apartment. Yesterday I was taking a small desk downstairs when she stopped me and quietly asked if everything was okay. I said yeah why? She goes “you know you don’t have to be embarrassed if you’re having financial problems.” I kinda laughed because I thought she was joking. She was not joking. Turns out she thought I had lost my job and was slowly selling all my belongings before moving out. She had apparently even mentioned it to another neighbor and they were debating whether offering me groceries would be insulting. Instead of immediately explaining like a normal person I got nervous and said “no no I’m actually doing pretty good financially.” Which apparently sounds EXACTLY like something someone doing terribly financially would say. So now I’ve explained the Marketplace thing but I’m pretty sure half my floor thinks I’m one missed rent payment away from disappearing. TL;DR: Sold a bunch of unused stuff on Marketplace, neighbor thought I was quietly going broke and selling everything I owned, and my attempt to explain somehow made me sound even more broke. |
