WoW has never really been an MMO on low-pop servers; it's a survival adventure game where I sometimes encounter other adventurers. I've been playing mostly on a "dead" realm since Vanilla, and if you've always been on a high/full realm, we haven't been playing the same game. I'm not arguing that one version is better than the other; just sharing a different perspective. WoW has always been a solo game for many of us because the world is empty. Before cross-realm group finder, it was often faster to outlevel a zone than sit around asking an empty chatbox for help with an elite quest or even a dungeon on the opposite faction's continent. Endgame zones like Timeless Isle, Antorus, The Maw, and now heroic world tier have always required patience, careful mob pulls, and route planning. The layering of servers over time has helped, but low-pop server groups are still low-pop. Trade and Services channels are still dead silent most of the time, and general chat in open zones even more so, especially if the faction balance is not in your favor. I enjoy focusing on crafting across multiple characters not to make gold from other players, but to be as self-sufficient as possible because that's the only way I can reliably find a crafter. This may sound like a complaint, but it's not. I love playing as a lone gnome versus the world. I AM the Crafter of War. And when I do feel like doing group content, the LFG tool is right there (though I mostly PvP because I can solo queue). I have characters on full servers like MoonGuard (US) just for auctioning because the AH is extremely limited for my mains other than mats & consumables. I disabled chat because it's filled with obnoxious children, trolls, and blatantly obvious social-engineering plants. Adding all the people changes WoW from an immersive adventure into a loud theme park where I have to wait in line for quest mobs and sometimes logging in. TL;DR: Solo content was introduced because many of us have always played solo; we didn't suddenly sprout up as soon as delves were made. |
