Whenever I see autistic people online explaining what autism is actually like or how it differs from the neurotypical experience, they seem to almost always mention meltdowns. It's made out to be a core part of being autistic. And yet, I don't experience them. I rarely cry - like maybe 1-2 times a year. I don't get emotional - in fact, I've even been described as robotic. There are many situations in which a normal person would be fine, whereas I get distressed. But instead of having a meltdown, I might get snippy, raise my voice, stutter, speak quickly in a panicked tone, or just hide how I'm feeling entirely. The people around me definitely perceive it as an overreaction, but it's nothing close to the meltdowns people describe. Is this really as unusual as it seems to be? Or is there a whole category of autistic people that, like me, have muted emotions and/or reactions? Side note: might be worth mentioning that, despite my username, I'm actually a women. Which might make my lack of meltdowns even more unusual. |
