I was at a funeral a couple of years ago. A distant family member passed away. One of the people who approached the podium to say something in remembrance was Deaf. No one was with him to do an interpretation. I understood some sign language because of an ex gf who knew how to sign, but I was not on the level of being an interpreter. So just like everyone else, I just sat there and watched this guy communicate in silence. I didn't understand 70% of what he was signing, but the 30% I did understand was actually funny. The guy was telling a story about how his coworker, aka the person who passed, accidentally farting in front of one of their VIP clients during a meeting. I laughed out loud, which prompted the lady behind me to say "don't be rude." I looked over my shoulder to make eye contact with this woman, but before I could explain my reaction, she shushed me. I turned back and realised people were staring at me like the funeral was my fault. I had a lot of explaining to do afterwards.

Anyway, it's an old story that I remembered when I bumped into the Deaf guy recently. He wanted to know if everyone still hated me lol.

Tl:dr Laughed at a Deaf guy's sign language speech during a funeral and made everyone hate me who didn't understand sign language.
