TL;DR: RomM + Argosy basically lets me treat my self-hosted ROM collection like an on demand library. Instead of loading up every new handheld with a carefully selected pile of ROMS, I just download whatever I actually want to play when I want it. RomM: https://github.com/rommapp/romm Argosy: https://github.com/rommapp/argosy-launcher I've been using RomM for my ROM library and recently combined that with Argosy on my Android handhelds and I don't think I appreciated how much this changes things until I got a new device. Normally getting a new handheld means setting everything up, then spending a bunch of time deciding which games I want on it, finding them in my collection, copying them over, etc. This time I basically just instaled/configured Argosy, browsed my RomM library, grabbed a few games I was already playing, and that was it. I was off and running. It sounds like a small thing, but having my whole collection available without actually having to keep the whole collection on every device is pretty dang fantastic. The handheld can just have the games I'm actually playing right now. If I suddenly decide I want to play something else, as long as I'm home I just browse to it and download it. Of course, now I'm thinking the next step is Tailscale or something similar so my RomM server is available when I'm away from home too. For a hobby where a disturbing amount of the fun is apparently buying a new handheld and then spending six hours configuring it this feels like cheating. I'm kind of surprised RomM + Argosy isn't a more common setup around here. Anyone else doing this with multiple handhelds? WARNING: AI WAS USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ABOVE SOFTWARE. |
