Obligatory this didn’t happen today but yesterday.

I was in a remote meeting with my team and was sharing my screen and talking over some revisions I was suggesting for something I’m currently working on. One of my coworkers started asking if I really thought it was worth going forward with things as currently proposed and began rambling about their thoughts on everything.

It’s not uncommon for them to be a bit long winded when sharing their opinions but also, the project is going forward in the direction that multiple people and other groups are expecting it to, and their proposition would mean completely throwing away developing something new which is why we’re even going through with any of this to begin with. Because of that, I think I pretty quickly checked out through their talking and ended up pulling up my chat with another coworker and started typing something along the lines of, “why are we even arguing this right now” for everyone on the meeting to see.

I didn’t end up sending it and backspaced what I had typed but then I still forgot that my screen was sharing and left our conversation up from earlier in the meeting where we were complaining about how we didn’t like the direction another project was going. It took the coworker who I was messaging to somewhat urgently propose I pull up the file again to go over the rest of it for me to finally remember that my screen was being shared that whole time.

Nothing that was said was particularly damning, especially not from the other coworker but I’m definitely mortified by my stupidity and incredibly embarrassed and I think it might be safe for me to at least expect a conversation on being less of a dumbass next week. Also, totally wouldn’t be opposed to the earth opening up and just swallowing me whole.

TL;DR: Forgot I was screen sharing during a work meeting, made an ass of myself by turning my mostly inside thoughts into entirely outside thoughts from a private chat for everyone to see.
