It was a Irish gangland drama from 2010 that I only just heard about for the first time. I just binged it, and I thought it was great. A gritty story about a Dublin gang filled with compelling characters. *Spoilers ahead* Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Nidge was a revelation. Wow. Such a magnetic presence on screen. Shout out to Peter Coonan as Fran, as well. He was remarkable. The writing has its ups and downs (seasons 2 and 3 were far and away the best with season 1 coming in close behind and seasons 4 and 5 a massive step down), but the story and characters are good enough that it makes you invested all the way through. I wasn't the biggest fan of Charlie Murphy as Siobhan here, and I can't tell if it's the acting or the character. She was too one-note. Sadly, the writing fails most of the female characters, which seems to be par for the course for crime dramas. It was an unwise decision, IMO, to sideline Tommy for seasons 4 and 5. His character was a nice balance of light to Nidge's dark. And I absolutely loved the tragic, layered relationship between Tommy and Debbie, so the show lost something when that went away. |
