Fire-flame vessels show that the Jōmon people had sophisticated pottery technology long before many other civilizations did and that this hunter-gatherer people enjoyed aesthetically pleasing ‪—‬ rather than purely functional ‪—‬ earthenware, according to Rao. But archaeologists are still not sure why the Jōmon crafted exquisite, flame-like pots or what the flames represented in their culture.

I can only imagine how hilarious it will be when future archaeologists start trying to assign meaning to our stuff when they find it in the future. All the action man figures, photo-wallpapers, tamagotchis, milk foamers ...

This is one beautiful piece of pottery! I would hope it was made because this culture permitted itself a slowness of existence that left enough time to craft beautiful things, without further meaning necessary. Not like us today always in a rush to fuck up more shit. Doing things slowly, manually and beautifully is way more ecological than mass production, we should return to that!
