Original Title: TIL George Mallory reportedly answered “Because it’s there” when asked why he wanted to climb Everest while touring the U.S. to raise funds. He perished on Everest in 1924, likely during the descent. His body was found in 1999, 75 years later, remarkably preserved by the cold.
