...so there is a male loneliness crisis going on. Clickbaity title. Also, calling it what it is doesn't mean in isn't caused by societal problems. The lack of available third spaces is a huge factor in that, which is just one reason why money (or lack thereof) is an important factor. |

There is, but there a female loneliness crisis at the same time with the same cause, that poverty and societal atomisation cause loneliness, is the argument. Its not great to pick a general problem and exclusively focus on one sub group of people suffering from it. In the same way that focus on violence against women excludes the larger number of men who suffer from violence. |

Every problem that women have is debated constantly in a zillion monthly publications, and daytime talk shows. Women can turn on the TV and spend all day seeing every nuance of their lives endlessly debated, and not once will anyone mention that men might be struggling, too. So this article comes out, and gets posted in a forum to discuss mens' issues, and you still want to hijack it to talk about women instead. Get the fuck outta here. |

I... didn't? In fact I specifically compared it to a similar topic where the myopic focus on women was detrimental to the men who are suffering. |

I agree with this perspective as I have lived it. I think they are a bit off on the college experience because even in that rich and poor is a very different experience. A student that got financial aid and paid his parents share working part time while studying something challenging like stem fields ends up with much less time to join clubs and such. They will but it will be a tough balance with grades and work. You often barely get to things on time and never do the outside of club activities that are the real socialization they talk about. |

If in 2020, everyone had panicked about 'The Male Breathing Crisis', framed it as mostly because of men failing to adapt to modern society, and ignored that women were getting a respiratory virus at exactly the same rate, it would only have distracted from efforts to identify the disease, stop covid spreading, and get people vaccinated. |

Do you know what those debates amount to? It’s mostly “you’re not pretty enough” or “you’re too picky(for having standards)” or anything else that can either sell them a product or get them to put up with abuse. And who is keeping the male issues off the air? Other men. Again, it sells an idea and keeps people divided. Men who talk about their feelings are way more likely to vote progressive and the rich can’t have that! They’re not hijacking it, they’re saying that the root cause ends up being the same. It unites the two problems, and lets everyone tackle the problem together and find solutions that work regardless of gender. There is a loneliness epidemic, not a male loneliness epidemic. |

That title made me think it was going to be the Dark Sorcerer Groth's doing instead of women, as the incels say. Turns out, it's just applying a class analysis to the consequences of patriarchal socialization, capitalist commodification of public space, and social opportunity stratification. I guess that is "darker" in that like, it sucks that it's the plain old colossus that is liberal-capitalist patriarchy doing the evil deeds. |

Self reported lonliness seems like it has obvious limitations given men are conditioned in a way that often results in them struggling to participate in their emotional experience 😅 Like we at least know that in cases of poverty the self reported loneliness of men goes up, but theres kind of an inherent methodological limitation to being able to compare between men and women in the way this article wants to... |

Look at the magazines in the check out line at the groceries, and watch daytime TV for one day. How many magazines and TV shows are directed at helping men navigate their problems in society vs women? Stop pretending you haven't noticed this. |

No, there is just a loneliness epidemic for poor people of both sexes. Attempting to specify a male specific label to it is just a way for grifters to sway more men to the alt right. |

None of those magazines or tv shows are attempting to help navigate women to address their problems, they are selling products. Its the same thing as claiming spike tv, gun, car, fishing, hunting, mma, or fitness magazine/podcast are attempting to help men navigate their way to better mental health. You notice that none of these have helped your problems because you have engaged with them, actually try and look at anything marketed towards women and you will see they are just as shallow as anything presented towards men. |

The entire article is about how being poor and atomizing the spaces people live and work in reduces their ability to form friendships and meet people. Nowhere in OPs comments did I see them try to force the issue as a women's issue. Take a breath and ask yourself why you're jumping down a strangers throat about a perceived slight that they didn't make against you. Whatever personal issues you have vested in this topic are shared by a lot of others. Being venomous about it helps noone. |

I would argue that this isolation and atomization of our social spaces and work spaces actually is on purpose. Desperate workers accept lower wages and are more willing to take on responsibilities they otherwise wouldn't. |

Well put, they did ask specific questions about their social lives, which probably is a bit better than to ask about a person's perceived feelings of loneliness. But that too has limitations, and i wonder if there can even be a better method. |

You can claim the amount of men suffering from violence is only larger if you exclude specific kinds of violence, and the reason women point out the "violence against women" problem is more due to the fact that there is a discernable kind of violence, specifically perpetrated against women (usually by men, and usually by people close to them) because they are women, and is mostly ignored as a specific societal issue. The violence men suffer from is usually generic, in the "everyone suffers from it, but men do more" kind of way, which is why fascist politicians allow themselves to act like it is a reason police should get more funding, weaponry and deregulation, knowing that their target audience, vulnerable/afraid/hateful men will show their support. There are issues unique to women and they should be allowed the space to formulate them without having to have a caveat pertaining to things outside their experience, we should too, but considering a cause for many of our problems is other men, that makes our job significantly harder than simply participating in a woman's discussion about their problems. |
