There's a bakery close to where I live that I used to get stuff from regularly. One of the things I liked had a really cringeworthy pun as a name, though, so I just said something along the lines of "the one with ham and eggs". I regularly got asked "so one [cringeworthy pun]?" At some point I said, "yes, the one with the cringeworthy name". The employee (who seemed to be a more senior employee) said I should use the product names because it would apparently confuse the apprentices otherwise. When I said that it's just too cringeworthy she started saying things like "no one else will notice that it's cringeworthy" and going in the direction of "come on, you can do it". Well, I don't go there anymore.

EDIT: since a number of people are commenting on my use of the word "cringeworthy": for one there are a number of places where it's fairly normal to use that word (and I mean IRL), and for another this happened in a different language.

Fun for them is probably being around someone who doesn't get up on a soapbox to profess their refusal to say the menu names at a shitty breakfast food chain like they're making some kind of outraged, principled stand.

Edit: Just want to point out the irony in eating at IHOP enough to have such a strong opinion on the menu names and then unironically calling other people obedient to corporations like IHOP because they think you're acting obnoxious.

How are they on a soapbox? They made a relevant comment in a related comment section. They are very on topic and discussing OPs post. You're kinda on a soapbox though, aren't you?

Funny meme and all but if a restaurant decides to do this and refuses to listen to anything but the ridiculous name for the food, then I won't be eating there. You know what I want, either give it to me or we're done here. There's plenty of other restaurants and this one isn't going to miss my $10 today.

> "I REFUSE to speak their gibberish"

> Calling other people "indulging in the childish marketing of corporations" (a corporation which I imagine you'd have to eat at a decent bit to be this pissed over it; couldn't say having eaten there like once when I was 7).

> Strawmanning those calling you out by insisting they're doing the thing you profess not to with no evidence. (They might just ask for the fruit pancakes or whatever and not say the name but not make a big deal out of it.)

> Putting up a giant "OBEY" sign because other people think you're acting like a clown.

No soapboxing here, nosiree.

In my family, "dribble" was an oft-used cutesy synonym for "drool". It reminds me of babies with food and saliva oozing down their chin. That wasn't explicitly my resistance to saying "Fribble" though; it just felt awkard and childish. We didn't have "cringey" as an adjective then - but in retrospect, cringey is how it felt.

If I pointed out an item on a menu and someone asked to read a ridiculous name or loud I'd walk right out. Here in Germany I can't imagine anything like that ever happening. Don't know about the US, of course, but even there that seems far-fetched.

Ohhhh so that's why German people learn English, so they don't have to say the ridiculous German words out loud!

Some German bakeries have excessively stupid names for their products too, though. I always refuse to say the name but point to the product in question. The usual answer is "Oh, you want one of the [silly-gibberish-name-of-an-overpriced-thing-that-tastes-like-sawdust-anyways]" - I nod, and that's a successful transaction done.

Using cringeworthy off of the internet is itself a bit cringeworthy. But I notice younger generations are no longer making such distinctions. So maybe this is becoming the norm. Older generations would not have done this. Except for really old generations, like boomers, who will occasionally throw in an Internet slang they picked up recently. Again young gen x and older millenials had this one figured out, just like we figured out technology on our own. Which is probably related, as we wouldn’t use those terms offline since we knew other generations wouldn’t understand. Now that all generations access the internet all the time, on the mainstream monopoly services, that distinction is no longer there.

For real? German bakeries do this all the time. It's a fucking Kürbiskernbrötchen, why do they all feel like they have to invent their own bullshit influencer name for it? Chances are 9 out of 10 get them from the same factory even.

UK here, I'd say cringeworthy is a pretty normal word. Or at least it was before kids dropped the second half of the word.

That's an incredibly dumb reason to not go to a nice bakery. People take themselves way too seriously. Embrace the cringe. Be whimsical and silly. Life's too short to go through it with a stick up the ass.

It's a thick milkshake, Friendly's is a chain of sit down restaurants, they serve food but most people know them for their ice cream.

The great thing is, people can choose to be silly or people can choose to be serious. Let the person go find a bakery that works for them.

Edit: that being said, I don't personally get why you can't just say a silly product name unless it's like really vulgar.
