A t-shirt would be cheaper. And, probably last longer. Those glasses are cheaply made.

I don't get it. Why does Meta glasses automatically make people that wear them perverts? Is anyone with a smartphone also a pervert or people that have dash cameras in their car?

2nd paragraph:

“I just wanted people to know I’m a pervert, you know? I mean, it’s a massive part of who I am. I did have a t-shirt with ‘I’m a massive pervert’ written on it, but people thought it was a post-ironic statement on modern sexual mores. It wasn’t, I’m just a weird, seedy bloke.”

If you are walking around with your cellphone out recording everyone all the time then yes.

If you are diving your car in all the places where people are also walking, you may be a pervert as well, but people will be much more concerned about the mass casualties.

They could maybe be super useful for people with vision problems. But probably people would avoid trying them for this reason.

But just because someone has Meta glasses, doesn't mean they are recording with them all the time. That is already illegal in many places, especially in states that requires two-party consent. For example, here in Washington State, recording someone without their consent in a location where they would have a reasonable expectation of privacy is already illegal.

And its not like all perverts record a majority of their interactions anyway. It would seem that most perverts, at least the ones that aren't complete idiots, wouldn't want evidence of their perversions uploaded to the cloud anyway. Trying to associate being a pervert with wearing glasses is a poor argument in my opinion. It seems that it is more or less trying to manufacture a perception, when the reality the actual concerns are much larger and nuanced.

If I was a pervert, I'd absolutely try to ferment the idea that people that wear Meta glasses are perverts, so then then people are hypervigilant focused on that while ignoring the countless other things that existed before.

Or traffic stops and protests where having video evidence is critical of abuses. Imagine some minority wearing the glasses to record abuses by ICE, and they get beat up ICE and the protestors.

Lol, found the guy who already bought the glasses.

People are getting tired of being recorded all the time. And trusting Meta to not be recording all the time is just hilariously naive.

I already know your argument is weak, because I don't have the glasses and your poor assumption is that I do. I'm all for better laws to address privacy concerns, but trying to associate glasses with a camera with all perverts is just lazy and weakens any change you'd hope to make.

I see value in these glasses. Makers, machinist, hobby mechanics you can make great POV instructional videos.

But to wonder around in public with them on with no fixed agenda I say naw, buy a go pro so people know your recording.

The change I would hope to make is impossible, so I don't really give a shit anymore.

Plus, anyone willing to give money to Meta is a write off anyway, so people also calling them perverts really doesn't bother me.

Real change takes time and effort. If you don't like Meta, then prototype some better open-source design that implements the positive changes you'd like to see. Or if you don't like that people even have a desire to have glasses with a camera, then look for root cause analysis of societal issues and try solving some of those.

The genie can't go back in the bottle. You can no more get rid Meta glasses than you can get rid of AI or nuclear weapons.

And those use cases have no need for inconspicuousnees.

That was my point, if I got a set of them for the purposes I posted but I would paint them blaze orange. Probably more for me as I lose my glasses all the time, but also makes them obvious.

Yeah, I agree. Back in 2018 I bought a new mac mini with the base 8gb of ram and decided to try upgrading to 32gb myself because it was a hell of a lot cheaper than paying the apple upgrade tax. But I was a complete noob when it came to tinkering with mac hardware. The video tutorial I found on YouTube was literally just some random guy, with a couple hundred views, holding a phone in one hand and describing what he was doing and why. The actual video was kinda bad, he was clearly making do with what he had, but his narration was more than enough to make the whole thing idiot-proof. These kind of "smart glasses" would probably allow someone like that to create better tutorials. The problem is that practical use cases like that aren't driving the marketing. So we're left with pervert glasses lol.

Such a senseless rebuttal since I never claimed people can't break the law. Are you going to ban everything that can potentially be used to facilitate a crime?

Most of us with smartphones are probably perverts.

Newsthump is basically a British version of The Onion. Sorry about the account log-in wall, that kicks in after you've viewed a few articles each month, I can't do anything about that. But their headlines usually contain the full joke, so you aren't missing much.

Just get a t shirt that says CHILD PORNOGRAPHER and then has an arrow that points up toward his face.

I kind of wish xAi would come out with CyberGrokgles, just so all the people who would be seen wearing them in public would be seen wearing them in public.
