Literally easier than Windows.

People are falling for this and downloading software from unofficial websites.

Linux is super easy.

  • Debian-based: # apt install firefox
  • Red-Hat-based: # dnf in firefox
  • Arch: # pacman -S firefox

TBF, on Debian apt install firefox installs firefox-esr, and on Ubuntu it's a placeholder that installs the snap package. Both work and are clearly better than downloading from random websites, but they do come with surprises for unsuspecting users.

i think i never even used a terminal to install a browser and i dabbled with linux on and off for over a decade now. there was always a gui to install a browser. well, not on arch in 2014 but back then i never made it past a half broken desktop enviroment. so my point still stands technically.

Thinking a command line is easier than double clicking an installer shows how far you linux users are devoid from the common user.

apt install software

Vs

Search " software "click download, accept security warning, navigate to wherever your default download location is, double click installer, click your way through the installer (make sure do deselect whatever crapware it tries to package along with).

Yup, the Windows way is totally so much easier.

Why is Ubuntu even still relevant?

Common users type into chatbots. They can 100% type the install commands. But also using the Bazaar or software center is super easy.

I disagree.

But still, you need to get the installer somehow.

I use Octopi generally, though the add/remove software app is prettier. If I have to install software via the command line I always have to double check the syntax. The command like version existing is extremely useful as a fallback though, and most (all?) gui package managers act as wrappers around the command line. So don't dunk on the command line

im the most tech savvy in my household. compared to general people, im still a normie.

my personal pc is linux based and whenever someone asked to use my pc for general purpose i have to do the terminal dance. now for some of you that may be easy but for me it's annoying. not to mention that i have goldfish memory so i have to duckduckgo which dependancy i need, troubleshooting and look for dependancy just to make my vlc support certain kind of media or connecting apple device to the pc.

im planning to distro hop to an easier one but im dreading to do the terminal dance all over again.

worth mentioning, my kb Fx keys are unusable for almost a year now and i exhausted all possible way to fix it. my steam streaming also outputting blank screen. i just dont have the urge and will to fix it

Unusable as in nothing at all happens, or do they do things like volume up/down when you press them?

If the latter, there may be an "FnLock" key combination you have to press. Usually, it's something like Fn+Esc. Or Fn + whatever key has a lock symbol or "FnLock" written on it...

its the latter. the fn thing doesnt work as the fn key doesnt register input. my initial asumption is that because my kb is on apple format and i couldnt change it to windows because it requires me to press the fn key (iqunix f96)

That just sounds like your keyboard is broken. Your keyboard switching its own functions does not involve the OS

It doesn't and you know that.

From there you click Firefox, then you click the download link it gives you on the next page, that downloads a file (still not installed) or takes you to an app store if you're on a phone, you run that file or click install on the app store to actually install the application.

Add programs.firefox.enable = true; to configuration.nix.

Call sudo nixos-rebuild switch. Maybe add --flake if you're feeling adventurous.

Done.

Or, more realistically...

programs = {
    firefox = {
        enable = true;
        # Configure anything you want here (language,
        # extensions, policies... whatever).
    };
    # Enable and configure other programs here.
};

... and keep the whole thing in a git repository to track changes and have it available for other machines.

Not wrong about OP, but also both major desktop environments on linux ship with "app stores" that are friendly to anyone familiar with a phone. So it's still easier installing software on linux than searching for and downloading .msi and .exe files on the internet (and hoping the version of MSI afterburner you found is the real one).

Great, you're halfway there with that sarcasm. Now apply that to the comment chain you posted in and.. hell why you're here the post itself and you'll get it now.

People still try to claim Linux is complicated and has a lot of unnecessary steps to install stuff and it just isn't true for vast majority of people installing the vast majority of stuff.

This sounds exactly like your problem: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=269796

It's quite a lot of detailed technology talk, which I don't expect you to understand. The main takeaway should be this:

So the problem is [temporarily] solved by running: rmmod hid_apple

This command unloads a driver that's potentially interfering here. The driver will be loaded again on next reboot.
Which is useful, because you can just try it out and if it doesn't work (or if it breaks something), you can just do a reboot and everything is back to normal.

You will need admin/root permissions to run this command, so the real command you need to run is: sudo rmmod hid_apple
It will ask you for your login password to confirm running the command.

If that does fix it, then we can look into making it permanent.

That would have also been my intuition, but apparently the driver is involved. At least, unloading the driver solved it in this case: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=269796

Uh, maybe you're not picking up the context clues here. I'm actively making fun of windows users. Blatantly even. The sarcasm is pretty one-sided toward the windows community. But thank you for trying to convert me to Linux. It's been a fun 20 years and hopefully 20 more.
