Does "survivors" now mean something more specific than what it says? Survivors of what? Fire, floods, car accidents, falling out of a tree? I feel like I'm just supposed to know, but I'm really not sure.

After #MeToo broke the cultural silence on gendered violence, survivors swiftly found themselves facing a new kind of silencing and fear as defamation laws became weaponised by alleged perpetrators against women for speaking out. International human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson takes audiences inside the courtroom and behind the headlines to reveal how the legal system is being used to victimise, discredit and financially ruin survivors, and journalists reporting on their stories.

Robinson brings unrivalled access to the women and journalists at the centre of high-profile legal battles across the globe, including Brittany Higgins, Australian former political staff er, survivor and advocate against gendered violence; Catalina Ruiz-Navarro, Latin American journalist and co-founder of the feminist magazine Volcánicas and Amber Heard, Hollywood actor and advocate who found herself at the centre of one of the most high-profile defamation battles in recent history.

From International Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Selina Miles and Blayke Hoffman, SILENCED is a powerful, emotional and urgent documentary that challenges the devastating flaws maintaining the status quo within the justice system.

Edit: Quoting the description of the movie is enough for the incels to come out, I guess lol

I can’t think of a worse actress than Amber Heard for this, she wasn’t silenced at all, she very publicly had her day in court.

As I recall it didn’t go very well for her.

And Depp lost his libel lawsuit in the UK. It was ruled that it is lawful to call him a “wife beater”. Amber Heard’s testimony was incredibly powerful there.

The US lawsuit saw an unprecedented amount of misogyny publicly launched at Amber Heard that went above and beyond anything she was actually guilty of doing.

Not to mention, there’s more women than Amber that are featured in this film.

I’m not familiar with the UK case but my comment is not a defence of Depp.

As I said, I understand the US case didn’t go well for her and she appeared to be an abuser.

Before you get mad about that, it is possible for two people in a relationship to both be abusive and not particularly uncommon.

As my comment stated, Heard’s testimony was key in the UK ruling.

Yes, of course two people in a relationship can both be abusive. There’s also the complicated topic of reactive abuse.

And aside from those facts - the level of sexism leveled at Heard in the US went above and beyond anything she deserved.

Since OP chose to interpret your question in bad faith, and I think everyone deserves at least one good faith answer:
EDIT: That's a completely wrong interpretation by me, I'm very sorry! The below still applies though.

"Survivor" in this context tends to refer "Survivors of abuse/assault". The use of the term "victim" is generally not the preferred term. I'll let someone who actually knows this stuff explain: https://www.rsacc-thecentre.org.uk/guest-blogs/victim-survivor-the-importance-of-the-language-we-use-to-talk-about-people-who-have-experienced-sexual-violence/

I quoted the description of the movie so they would know what survivor meant in this case.

It wasn’t a bad faith interpretation.

I'm so sorry! I thought you were calling them an incel for just asking, I only just noticed the deleted comment by a person I blocked.. Shit, I screwed up.

Yeah the incel comment was added in after the description of the movie started getting a bunch of downvotes.

I literally quoted the description of the movie from the website.

If that’s enough to upset people, I don’t really care if I’m being snarky.

Depp hired a notorious PR firm to absolutely trash her in the media—the same person Baldoni hired in his lawsuit against Blake Lively. She had a PR firm working for her, too, of course but Depp’s person (Melissa Nathan) is known to be pretty evil and the fact that it’s a woman attacking another woman is pretty gross.

I think they are both probably shit people. It’s impossible to tell who is worse.
