Just listening to Adam Conover's latest interview about the state of vidogames.

Here what is happening across almost all industries:

  1. The people who have the money don't care about anything other than money.
  2. The people who have all the money want to talk to other people who only care money.
  3. Therefore, people who only know about money are now in charge of all companies.
  4. People who only know about money don't know about anything else, including the products they are building, how the business is run, maintaining customer relations, how to build franchises, etc. Most fundamentally they don't understand: ROI in entertainment is a scatterplot: you have some hits, some flops, some break-evens and everything in between.
  5. Since everything has to be an instant hit to generate massive revenue, anything less than a guaranteed hit is cancelled. And to make SURE things are a hit, it has as many popular beats as possible. This leads to everything being the same, chasing the same trends, creating a homogenous pool of products that make people tune out entirely; and customers also tune out because they fall in love with too many shows that aren't renewed after the first season, or live games that shut down their servers after a few months.

Reading this, it looks like adult swim is:

a) being run by the people who understand their product
b) and understand their audience
c) and are willing to experiment and make flops so they can make a hit sometimes.

This did not used to be hidden wisdom, but we're living under rule by a moronic MBA class.
