“We’re making the service more expensive to run in order to justify the incoming enshittification”

Yeah, thanks Nexusmods, that’s exactly what we need right now

Nexus mods? you mean the same site that paywalls downloading mods in bulk, and account walls downloading files to require sign in? And has already been proven to remove free features if they think it can be a decent perk for the sub model, the same site that deactivates accounts after a few months of no activity, the one with literal ads in their first party software and the only way to get around it is to pay a monthly subscription. That is the site you plan to keep your "always free, no paywall" product on.

Yea OK, I love the ambition but I will believe that when I see it. I expect SteamDB will be locked behind a paywall a few years from now at the latest.

Also if I find it amusing that if you look at the FAQ's on it... they are straightforward and say they plan to make money off of it.

edit: Upon looking it up again, I misremembered the third party situation. They rate limit third party, if detected, so I removed that complaint.

And so it begins, the beginning of the end.

On the upside, someone will probably scrape the data and copy it now, if we're all wise enough to groan wearily at this news reflexively.

So, y'know. On to the next thing, eventually, whenever that comes along.

Lots of understandable doom and gloom in the comments, but from the FAQ it really does not seem like the current iteration we know today will be super different down the line. Yes, yes, take Nexus Mods' word with a mountain of salt, but it really does seem to be helping Nexus Mods' backend more, and having affiliate links seems to be the least intrusive method to make the site money. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

They write down that the current feature set will not be paywalled but mandatory account registration and paywalling future features are absolutely on the table.

Enshittification again?

If it's not open source, it will be thrown into the next quarter meat grinder, just a matter of when.

Have to agree with you. While I’m not the biggest fan of Nexus Mods, I do think they’ve improved the modding scene overall. Before Moddb or Nexusmods, it was a total crapshoot whether you were downloading a mod or a virus, and if it was a mod then there was no guarantee that it'd actually work. And at least from my personal experience I've been able to do whatever I wanted with only the trouble of creating an account and logging in (which sucks I won't lie).

That said, I really hope they stick to their announcement and use it to actually make versioning integrate with their mods rather than use this as a cash grab to enshittify.

Agreed. IMHO Nexus Mods has improved since the takeover, so hopefully the same will happen here. I'm not against a site owner making money off of it, as long as it's done well and you get enough value in return. That's something entirely different than enshittification.
