This is a post about my path from subscription to selfhosted. My little struggles (which is pretty much none) to what I use and my view on the digital property.

I also had discussed on the concept of property, in this case it's a grey area depending on your country if you can download youtube videos to listen later. But it's a idea to have in mind.

Either way, it's mostly about music.

All feedback is welcome.

I'm not through yet, but the rent/own animation is very fitting and also very cool

I did "buy" (attention on the quotes) the anime Ghost in the Shell (1995) on Amazon Videos, this is my favorite animation, and I watch every year. I've DVDs, BlueRays and such, when I moved abroad bringing the devices to watch was a hurdle, so a online purchase was the dream. Guess who lost the access to this animation due to "contract reasons with the reseller, not with the customer"...

This was my spark to start a homelab. One step at the time. One day I'll have everything that I need on my lab.

The buying vs "renting" comparison is on-point. Setting up Jellyfin last year was great and all, but Navidrome is probably the most used service in my entire setup. I've probably spent more on music files than I have in all my years on streaming services, but for the artists, one album purchase goes so much further than 1000+ streams last I checked (though admittedly the bulk of my library is still built through slskd).

The entire appeal of a home server to me in the first place was breaking away from big tech bullshit, and this was such a huge piece of it.
