Context: Ishikawa Sanshirō (1876–1956) was a prominent Japanese Christian, socialist, and anarcho-syndicalist who played a foundational role in Japan’s early 20th-century radical movements. After resigning from the Yorozu Chūhō newspaper in 1903 to protest its endorsement of war with Russia, he co-founded the anti-war Heimin-sha group and contributed to the Heimin Shinbun, facing imprisonment for his anti-nationalist writings and advocacy of direct action. Because he was imprisoned during the 1910 High Treason Incident , he evaded the state-sponsored eradication of the radical leadership, subsequently spending several years in Europe where he deepened his syndicalist ideas with figures like the Reclus family. Following his return to Japan in 1920, he helped establish syndicalist federations, and after World War II, he participated in reviving the Japanese Anarchist Federation while writing on mutualist economics, cooperative societies, and non-violent social transformation until his death in 1956. |
