There was another post that got deleted which made me interested in "The Breakfast Club". Maybe we can continue the discussion here? People said Allison is a cool character and that people like Allison turned out to be good people in their experience. What do you think about that? Others said, you must see this movie if you're one of those "movie nerds" as it's cinematographically competent. @southsamurai@sh.itjust.works wrote a whole essay on it (thanks btw). What other movies tried to copy The Breakfast Club and failed? Or succeeded? |

Excerpt from @southsamurai@sh.itjust.works's mentioned essay: Hughes had this really distinct visual style. Bright, vibrant, and kinda larger than life. He used it to take a look at slices of life that were, in the breakfast club, angsty as fuck. Most scenes are vivid, and the drama plays out in that almost candy coated world. Since the cast was perfect for their roles, something else Hughes wa...
Absolutely fine, glad it sparked interest :) |

I remember studying this film as a young teen. It was an old film then, and that was a long time ago. As such, I have no real constructive comments to add, sorry |

If you studied it, you certainly have something to say, don't you? |

Um. Good music. Character development. That shot between the chicks legs. Satsifying story arch and a general fun 80s vibe. That's about all I remember |

I find it interesting that the stereotypes don't resonate as well today. In the mid 2000s that movie still hit hard. I think that everyone should see a bit of every character in themselves. Either based on stereotype or what is revealed as the characters share with one another. |

I don't understand: you have no opinions about the movie because it's old? |

I agree, and I think that was the "point" of the movie (its theme or thesis). Anthony Michael Hall's voiceover in the very last scene, where he's reading the essay he wrote in detention, says almost exactly this. |

It's a decent movie and I'd watch it again, but I watched it like 25 years ago. It's a little hard to remember |

I was the age of the characters in the movie when the movie came out. I don't think the movie had any significant impact on our generation or culture or society, but it was extremely impactful on how we felt. Keep in mind that there was no world wide web or cell phones then, so the act of viewing a movie and sharing it with friends* was different than than it is now. I don't feel changed by the movie, but I loved it. It felt rebellious and very relatable. And I had a major crush on Ally Sheedy.
"People like Allison"? Does that mean emo people (which we called goths back then)? Kleptos? Rebels? Loners? Outcasts? *By "friends", I mean actual friends. We didn't have Facebook "friends" or "influencers" or Insta followers or tiktokkers or whatever else exists today. We shared things with a few people we liked, not uncountable people we would never meet or speak to. |

Why did you dislike it?
It was a genre of movie that presented a life I felt alienated and removed from. I'll also admit I felt a bit of disdain towards its characters. |

I “watched” this movie on TV a few times as a kid in the 90s. I always hated it because it didn’t make sense to me. Many moons later I realized why, they cut out the part where they all smoke weed together to make it ok to play on TV. Seems like a pretty critical plot point to cut out! |
