To make Linux on the desktop successful on a level comparable to Windows and macOS, it is key to think about the Linux desktop as a core OS platform that makes certain platform stability guarantees to developers, rather than a bunch of packages distributed by a Linux distribution. As of today, there is a number of issues making the deployment of applications to the Linux desktop unnecessarily cumbersome.

In this talk we will highlight real-world difficulties in using the Linux desktop platform as of today, and present some ideas on how to fix them.

Eventhough it is old, it was interesting.

I think one of the things that have changed, and will even more since then, is the "getting the application from the author". Does not all enterprise spaces now adays, and even more with llms and vibecoding, want their employees to not be able to get applications from the author, only from a certified source. They'd say if Apple says it is fine, go ahead, but they would not trust a random author.

What I mean is not that this point to some solution, but rather yet another problem for the linux desktop, in enterprise spaces at least. And it is a growing problem.
