I vividly remember editing game files to add feminine sprites and clothing for my characters at some point without questioning it.

These two specifically, in my case.

I also tend to choose female characters when playing anything where i can choose, which leaves me with 2 possibilities:

  • I am a very late bloomer and will realize my true nature somewhere in my sixties or
  • I simply like looking at and hearing women a lot more than looking at and hearing men. The voice acting is a lot better most of the time (Cyberpunk 2077 is the obvious example - i can't stand playing with the male voice), and women are allowed to express emotions in games more often than men; worst offenders are games with a protagonist whose personality is so flat that even glue just slides off.

Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 have especially been core since you can set the gender aside from voice and genitals. They feel like a real self-insert.

I'm still sad Panam wasn't into my female V, but I respect it. Judy is awesome.

Yeah, it was definitely telling I would pick female characters and have them in lesbian relationships... Femshep and Liara 🥰

Yeah Cyberpunk is unfair example, the VA for fem V was absolutely perfect and dudes was very mediocre. Same with AC Odyssey, the VA for Kassandra gave such a great performance I don't even remember the brother option despite him still being in the rest of the game lol. And of course anything with Jennifer Hale voicing a playable character practically removes the alternatives for me, still main a plant lady in GW2 and only play femshep in ME because I love her acting so much.

I mean,
1 - both are badass, who doesn't like to play as a badass person?

2 - neither game lets you choose a male character.

3 - see 1

In response to 2: this is true but remedy entertainment (who made control) also made Max Payne 1 and 2 which I never really had any interest in. And I actually have the vr horizon game and get sad when I hear the main character speak.

I often resort to my dies/dices when I chose my character's gender, class race, or other features. What does it say about me ?
Not much relating to gender identity, I guess, except that I don't have any problem with playing any gender.

(Still not cis, though.)

Dang you expressed it perfectly so I don’t have to. My second playthrough on Cyberpunk 2077 as the male VA was such a let down. Let men have emotions! It’s like that in a lot of games.

Also, men hairstyles in character creators are trash.

A principle of historical research: a timeline can impose structure on a mess of data and reveal the meaning.

2000s: A number of introvert boys with special interests assure you that Playing a Female Character in DnD is OK and Means Nothing.

2020s: Most of them are women now, Looking the Other Way when memes like this come up in the feed.

Or "ideal male voice" doesn't match your idea of you

I like my voice very much - i have a very distinct prosody and good control over what i want to express with tone alone, i really can't complain. I've worked with costumers on the phone for many, many years, and the amount of influence on the mood of costumers i was able to project in the latter years of this work through my voice alone (because often i had to bear bad news even to costumers who were already agitated at the job at that time - i was working at an automobile club similar to the AAA, and telling someone that we wont bring their car back home after an accident in a foreign country where people were hurt because the transport would be more expensive than the remaining value of the wreck really isn't a fun thing) was somewhat disturbing for me at times. I had a woman once that called again after speaking to me, and she asked if my colleage would be willing to send me her ICQ number because of my voice (this was NOT what i was aiming for here, i wanted to fix her internet connection lol). He transmitted it to me, but a) i was in a relationship at the time and b) she was simply too normie for someone deep in the goth and metal scene at that time.

Max Payne 1/2 actually were allowing the male actor to express some emotions, which is my main gripe with male VAs in games. Publishers seem to be scared - instead of allowing male VAs to express emotions, they make them as flat as possible to allow them to be an self-insert.

If you want to have a male MC with VA, give him some options! Not everyone wants their male MCs to be so bland that they are irrelevant, and not everyone wants any MC to be an self-insert. Most game MCs i have an attachment to are the ones that actually have an opinion, who have values that might not be my own but which i can relate to. Every studio stunting the emotional expression of their characters is stunting the potential of their games.

I'm more than a little pissed off that Dylan is the main character in control resonant. I was hoping it would be Jesse again. Perkele!

I like games where I can’t even choose. It’s not me anyways
