bank want CCTV, but I didn't steal my own card so even though I and they know where the card was used I cannot obtain the CCTV as I'm not the data subject (the fraudster is!) so it can't be released to me, and the bank said it's not their process to seek it! I'm now £48 down a week before payday and they've riled me as SURELY they must be able to get the CCTV?! so yeah, I'm mildly infuriated right now.

Idk if I understand this random ranting but police can probably subpoena any CCTV footage to catch the criminal committing fraud with your stolen credit card.

reported to the police over the weekend, they said if the person on the CCTV is known to them then they will investigate, if they are not then it will be filed!

The police don't exist to help you recover stolen goods. They exist to write down your complaint and follow up if they happen to find a connection. ACAB.

The police exist to protect the assets of the rich and powerful, and produce revenue for the state. People were surprised when they wouldn't go into the school at Uvalde. I'm surprised they showed up before it was over.

Yeah, you definitely need the police. They're law enforcement and get access to surveillance footage. Some random person (like you) doesn't get the same privileges to investigate other people. That's usually how countries with rule of law work.

And better hope the police is doing an okay job... You could also get a lawyer. That's expensive, though.

Sounds like you might need to file a report with your local police if you haven't already.

That is why they exist, but you can sometimes get them to cooperate via a war of attrition. Basically, make yourself enough of a nuisance that helping you becomes easier than ignoring you. Don't start out belligerent, it helps to begin with the imagined assumption that the cops are there to help you, and you are merely there to politely request that help. Eventually they'll either help, or try to get rid of you. keep calling for followups. If you get a brushoff, ask for a supervisor. repeat as needed.

I haven't had many run-ins with the law, but I have used this tactic with my local PD, to (eventually) good effect, at least once. It's exhausting, and it can take a while, but it can work.

In the US, I'm pretty sure this strategy works much better if you're white, otherwise YMMV.
