They should go to bathroom with doors open from now. Comfort of privacy is meaningless if they got nothing to hide, right?

Meta are harvesting your friends data that you have, contacts, birthdays, addresses etc. Using these platforms means that you are probably sharing friends data without their consent just because you don’t care about your own.

Anyway that’s how I would put it to them.

Theres a quote something along the lines of “I have nothing to hide; I simply don’t trust someone else’s version of justice." When they want to look though my things. Just because what you do in your home city is right and legal, doesnt mean it is when you travel, when other governments look at you, when other organizations target you. Nothing to hide just means the collective "they" have more ...

Yep, that is a perfect response. Different jurisdictions have different rules and ethics; having your pants down vs being anon is the difference between easily becoming a criminal upon your arrival and them just knowing the stuff they need to know.

They don't think they have anything to hide because they think of it as "evil activity"

Reframe it, like sure you are not doing anything bad but these companies don't care about criminal or evil behaviour. For them you are like livestock you only serve one purpose: making them money, there are no morals involved. They would sell your data to absolutely anyone for any reason!
YOU can't think of anything bad they could do with your data because YOU are not evil but THEY absolutely are. If an evil person wants your data you shouldn't give it to them because they WILL find a way to use it against us, its a law of nature just like gravity.

I did this once to someone and they were like "ok sure here you go..." I wanted to then check their gallery just to make a point, but I ended up not doing it because it made me so uncomfortable. Guess I won't be fit as a totalitarian regime leader 😆. I just don't understand how some people care THAT little for their own privacy.

Next time just open their banking app and start transfering money to your account, let's see how long that lasts.

You might just be in a bubble of privacy-minded people. I know many people who would hand over their phone unlocked at the drop of a hat. Their digital lives just don't mean anything to them. But more likely, they don't appreciate the damage someone can do with that access.

Next time just open their banking app and start transfering money to your account, let's see how long that lasts.

Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different from saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say. - Edward Snowden

came here to say this and i'm glad lemmy is keeping this alive.

The way regressive bigots and their toadies are gaining power all over the world? We'll probably find out in a couple of months.

Sometimes asking if their private conversations (about spouse or kids) conversation would be different with an active observer in the room. Or if they are OK with a stranger at each window watching you. But some see that as paranoia, so it is fruitless.

The real issue is things like: how ICE is requesting records without subpoenas from telecom industries and they comply. Which lets them target protestors, and arrest them an trumped up charges. That's the slide into 1984 distopia. But it still comes off as paranoid.

The big perspective shift for me, is not that I feel obliged to privacy in public. It's when the institution observing is so big and centralised that it becomes a power issue. I don't care if you (the people) see all that I do in public, I have nothing to hide. I do care when your agenda is to see everything and gain power from it.

Shift the conversation towards autonomy, dignity and self-respect.

The user's interaction with the-billion-dollar-company's software is unpaid labour, which is why they profit and the user suffers. They suffer from having their data stolen; they suffer the expenses fostered on to them; they pay for the computers that spy on them; they pay for the electricity to run the spyware; they pay for the data-subscriptions that facilitate the theft of their data. They cover all the expenses of a billion-dollar-company and are deprived of any profit. They do not even garner a wage.

If one wishes to move towards the point of "my data is worthless" point out the company's profits or even its speculative valuations. Clearly it's not worthless. The products that are derived from their exploitation lead to even greater profits for those companies. "A.I." is a looting of the collective commons. A privatization of humanity's interaction with computers.

Do they like being exploited? Do they like their batteries draining faster, because their mobile-computer is running software to spy on them? Do they like running out of data because their mobile-computer is forcefully downloading ads and spyware-updates? Do they like ads? Do they like being interrupted by the highest bidder? Do they like annoying notifications that are just ads? Do they like this shitty experience? Are they complete docile slaves? They are less than wage-slaves for they do not even garner a wage! Have some self-respect and dignity!

I tell them privacy is a human right, that I don't need to come up with justifications for why I don't want to be exploited, and that you're only conditioned not to care.

If they don't see my point then I say OK then.

That is a good response. The problem is though they are also collecting data when we are in private. Look at what LG and I grantee you other smart TVs are doing.

I do have something to hide. I wear clothes, because I don't want everybody to see my naked body. I keep my debit card hidden in my wallet, my keys to my car and house hidden in my pockets, my passwords are hidden in my password manager, my phone's unlock code is a secret, my SSN is hidden on a card in a secure place in my house, which I also lock up securely. I close the stall door when I use ...

See the clothes thing is stupid you also wear clothes to keep you warm, keep your body from damage. There are so many other reasons to wear clothes then hiding things.

The other issue with data harvesting is there is no time limit. They just collect and store it forever.
