Building standards treat all concrete the same, hindering the use of greener concrete, but climate conditions play a much bigger role in determining a structure’s durability

That points to a fix that’s more about policy than materials science: building standards that account for local climate, rather than applying identical rules everywhere.

They're claiming that corrosion reactions react at different rates depending on the local climate, so local building code should reflect that. Sounds like basic chemistry.

There is already precedent in many regional building codes for things like seismic activity, flooding, and tornadoes. Lfg

The department that tests products and updates the code is probably underfunded

The study is for Europe, but in the US, the construction industry writes a model code and localities mostly just adopt it with fairly limited local changes

Underfunding of regulatory departments and rubber-stamping is also common in Europe, it was a major factor in the Grenfell fire
