I grew up in the noughties (British) and for ages since then, I’ve always had this fragmented memory of this episode of a tv show, likely on CBBC or CITV, it was a live action show. In this episode, a teacher instructs the caretaker to construct a cage for the back of the classroom. Later in the episode, as the teacher is teaching, you can see a student stood in the cage watching from the back of the class.

Always struck me as kind of a weird thing. Any idea what this would be? What show and what episode it might be? It’s been driving me insane for years and Google is no help (nor Reddit)!!!

Was it whacky or serious? Demon Headmaster?

Idk, I literally remember that clip and nothing else. It wasn’t something I was watching per se. Just something playing in the background that I happened to see those clips, so I don’t know whether it was a comedy, drama, etc. I’ll check out the headmaster one. Also it was a female teacher who requested the cage, and a male caretaker if that narrows it down.

ETA: just looked up the headmaster one and I couldn’t find an episode around a female teacher commissioning a cage, fairy sure it wasn’t that, but thanks anyway for the suggestion.

I had to look up what the noughties was, so I am already a few steps behind. But maybe this kind of list might help

Thanks. It’s a good idea, although I can only remember a few very specific clips of 1 episode of whatever it was, and I’m not sure if I could figure it out on that basis just from the series title. But ill give the list a look anyway, thanks for the suggestions

Grange Hill Season 20 episode 1

That is an excellent suggestion, many thanks. I need to look into this more though, as I seem to remember the cage being used as a form of punishment rather than as a statement.

Grange Hill Season 20 episode 1

After having done more research on the episode (despite not having been able to find the episode itself) I believe that this could be it and I may have just simply misremembered minor details about what my young brain was seeing on the screen. Thank you

Memory can be a funny thing. Glad we found it

Grange Hill Season 20 episode 1

I can still hear the theme...

I don't remember it being that whacky though.

Sounds like maybe a Roald Dahl thing like Matilda.

That’s a good suggestion, however another user has seemingly already found it. Turns out it was likely something called ‘Grange Hill’ season 20 episode 1

What about the aughts? I think that was a common way they referred to 1900-1909

Eh, when I hear turn of the millenium, I just remember back when people were using that for the 1,000's. Such a cringe time...

I think it's a good facsimile of "turn of the century"

Aughts is good too. Funny nobody thought to call the year 2007 ‘double-0 seven’. Man, what a missed opportunity.
