I just watched a video about Bell Labs.

I know of Bell Labs, of course -- everyone with even a passing interest in modern computer science or telecommunications has heard of Bell Labs -- but I didn't actually know quit how prolific they were.

It makes me think about science, in general. Currently, I'm doing a PhD -- at a university, predictably -- and I do think of myself as doing public research, in the sense that I'm doing research publicly, funded by public funds. Which is true! However, I am also employed at a company, full-time, and the research that I'm conducting will very much be used for private objectives of said company -- to develop products and make money, effectively.

That's... Kind of like Bell Labs? A private lab that did public research.

It's really quite different, very different, really... But, I don't know, I think there's something there. A passing similarity.

I really don't know how much research is conducted these days. Well, I know universities do a lot, but I do find some private enterprises being quite prolific in particular fields -- mostly computer science, which is not my field.

Oh well...

I wore my corduroy pants, today.
