The flared base is just for show, inside it has straight sides.

It's mostly bloodworm sludge anyway.

More importantly. How could you possibly clean that thing and know if it was clean or not. ?

They just put things back into the replicator without washing them. Otherwise you'd end up with as many cups as tribbles.

The flared base is to keep it from tipping over during travel, which space stations are known to do a lot of.

No, these were for sale everywhere in the 90s, separate from the show. The idea was you could put your coffee on the dash or on a table in the back of an RV and not have it spill. There was typically a rubber, non-skid bottom.

Now, they’re nowhere.

That was the issue with those travel mugs. Likely why they’re not sold anymore. Another 90s item that did not last.

Cup holder technology made them redundant, and also useless, since they don’t fit in any.

You can still get them. https://www.masterreplicas.com/en-us/products/raktajino-mug-star-trek-deep-space-nine

The flared base, which does hold liquid and is not just for looks, and the hollow handle make cleaning these a PITA. I just store pens in it now.

You just limbo it.

Is that where Odo goes in, enjoys spending time as a coffee, and cleans it when he leaves?

The things a changeling will do for love...

NEXT question: is the base solid clay or is there hollow space between the cylinder and the corners?

Cleaning? The patina brings out the true flavor.

Would've been a neat canon quirk if all replicator-produced dinnerware were edible, but seldom taken advantage of on account of them being hard and bland... like those "which one is cake" videos where they eat shoes and the like.

Willy Wonka eating a teacup

Genius. I love the idea.
