The friendly performance, like the meeting itself, seemed out of character. A central tenet of the Chinese Communist Party holds that Taiwan is not a sovereign country but a wayward province that must be subjugated before China can fully achieve its idea of national greatness. Since taking power, in 2012, Xi has made it his mission to isolate and dominate Taiwan...
