DSP showed that no player input is needed to complete Wolverine's first motorcycle section. Considering he's the sort of guy this level of difficulty is made for, even he's baffled that he didn't need to do anything to clear the section.

The people who say the game is far too easy may have a point.

This is what happens when you design games by quantifying everything into a number for a spreadsheet so a manager can read a report. Bet they did a playtest with their “target” audience aka non-gamers Sony wants to convince to buy a PlayStation for this game remember execs and shareholders only care about growing the player base. And some manager looked at the playstest numbers, noticed that many people couldn’t finish the section. And then ordered the team to make sure 90% of non-gamer playtesters can finish the game.

Found it highly entertaining, and that's what games are about. I do understand criticism of dumb mechanics and plots and such, I do that all the time, but this simply looks like and is silly entertainment.

This isn't even a question of hard or easy challenge. There's is no challenge. You can literally put the controller down and the game completes that section all on its own.

One way of thinking says maybe that's okay. Maybe people just want to have a chill time and win and not struggle. Maybe that's fine.

But on the other hand, it's utterly deceptive.

To me, this is a reflection of the entirety of modern capitalism. Appeal to everyone. Don't exclude anyone. Provide an illusion of choice while giving everyone the exact same homogenised experience. Provide the appearance of agency while removing all actual control.

I don’t mind a little challenge as long as I can learn the game and master a skill. I don’t like QTEs at all, and that includes dodge/parry mechanics. It’s like playing Guitar Hero on Expert with a controller, but you can’t see the notes. If you’re doing what the game wants but you’re a second or so off and that napes you lose, that’s a game I won’t complete… or shed a single tear if anyone pirates it or the studio closes. Games that punish gamers shouldn’t exist. If gamers want the challenge they can have it, but it should be optional and not required to complete the story. I’m fine with achievements being disabled for lowering the difficulty, just make the game accessible to differently abled gamers.

He's kind of a pile, so I'd never support him by watching him, but he's one of those where every few years I check in on the drama. The man has:
Masturbated on stream
Gotten a girl in a relationship to travel across the country to fuck him, without abandoning that relationship
Got that girl to move in with him, at which point she dropped her old guy
Declared bankruptcy, due to spending 5 figures a month on a pay to win mobile game
Steadily alienated his viewers to the point that he does more begging for money than playing games. Last I heard, he was down to one whale of a paypig keeping him afloat.

From what I have heard, the QTEs also self-complete without any user input. There's easy and then there's "not even playing a game." This Wolverine game sounds like the latter.

I'm not sure I agree with your definition of a game, but I am certain I can't work out the meaning of what you have written here.

But I would argue that if there is any interactive element, you can't say it's a movie either. Just because one section doesn't require player input doesn't mean the entire thing plays itself.

I remember a little indie game predicated on this once. You were shown upcoming game state the player was in, and had to make choices so they'd get the maximum score without doing anything. I was a like Columns or Tetris like game, so you'd have to arrange the board so if they just dropped the pieces they'd get a combo.

It's not about the lack of difficulty, it's about the lack of quality and thought that has gone into making this. Large publishers are now convinced that effortless crap like this is the way to go because it will sell anyway, thus dragging down game quality in general.

You should see the driving in 007 First Light. You just hold the accelerator and when you're about to hit something "steer assist active" comes up on the screen and it just steers away from it automatically.

DarkSydePhil and the game is literally just "Wolverine". DSP is notorious for being kind of a miserable person who, in the nearly 20 years he's been making gaming content, has never learned how to play a video game.

These devs clearly played the train mission in San Andreas and were left emotionally scarred.
