BSD isn't Linux.

GNU/Linux Copypasta

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

This made me look up if you could somehow run it on vacuum tubes, sadly not But https://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/News/Hacker-Successfully-Runs-Linux-on-a-CPU-from-the-Early-70s 9 day boot time on a 4004!

OMG!

I booted Debian Linux on a 4-bit intel microprocessor from 1971 - the first microprocessor in the world - the 4004. It is not fast, but it is a real Linux kernel with a Debian rootfs on a real board whose only CPU is a real intel 4004 from the 1970s. The video is sped up at variable rates to demonstrate this without boring you. The clock and calendar in the video are accurate. A constant-rate video is linked below.

Yes, as long as you have enough memory. That's the point.

The 2N3904 isn’t “minimum requirements for Linux” - it’s one bipolar transistor, and a Linux-capable computer still needs a CPU made from vastly more transistors, plus RAM, storage, clocking, buses, and supporting hardware. Not funny.

I think humor should still be truthful, because plenty of people will believe whatever they read online and then repeat it as fact.

Honestly, this could even be a Chinese campaign to make Americans stupider. They’d benefit from that.

The previous paragraph is a completely made-up misinformation - exactly the kind of thing people can easily believe and spread. Which helps nobody. Except China.

Normal Person: "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse"

bnn1: "WELL, ACTUALLY, thats a lie because the average human stomach can only hold a maximum of about 4 liters of equivalent content, and a horses edible components break down into a far greater volume than 4 liters, as you should well know, making it fundamentally impossible for a human beings stomach, much less body, to be able to consume even a fraction of a horse before suffering egregious emergency harm. While I agree this is funny, if you even just install one flatpack like steam that is like 15+ gb by itself. A fairly comprehensive system with kde, gimp, blender office and more take up much less space.

that is like 15+ gb by itself.

Well, yeah. But once you install more, they reuse parts you already have. Looking at a single programs space use alone is pretty meaningless.

It's like complaining that a calculator app takes 15 gigs because I installed a whole OS for it. Of course that'd be insane. But the next program you're installing, you are using that already installed 15 gigs. Then more you install, the less it is using per program, thanks to deduplication and shared runtimes.

You are allowed to notice things are less efficient than they could be even with plenty of resources

I wonder how they'd make the shared runtimes and whatnot work without using extra space. Soon you'd be back at the original repo model with the issues that come with that.

I think humor should still be truthful

It is truthful. The transistor is a metaphor for Linux' low system requirements and plays with the running gag (and fact!) that you could run Linux on almost any computer system, regardless how shitty it is. This meme here is another hyperbole in the series of jokes that evolved around these low requirements.

Apart from that, I don't think humor must be truthful. You can set up a fictional setting and still make it humorous. Otherwise we wouldn't have all those ghost jokes for example. Just because ghosts don't exist, doesn't mean it can't be humorous to pretend such scenarios.

Computers operate on MOSFETs (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors) not PNP or npn transistors. Each MOSFET only uses so much wattage compared to transistors which is why they are more frequently used over npn/pnp transistors.

I get its a joke, but you could have at least gotten the correct kind of transistor.
