This week, I attended 3 events of a local week-long cello festival. It was awesome. It started with Where Music Grows, directed by Katrine Philp, on Sunday. The movie was incredible. Beautiful cinematography, great settings in the farm and the mountains, interesting people and events (especially Roberta Verna's arch, for me), and, of course, breathtaking music. Because of my metro timings and a delay in the showing, I wasn't able to speak with the people involved, namely Jacob Shaw and Johannes Gray, but it was still fantastic to just be able to watch the movie in such a delightful location, too, at the University's Botanic Garden. Then, on Tuesday, I watched Ophélie Gaillard perform live at the Old Cathedral. Not only was the location absolutely bonkers, but her performance was just incredible. I loved how vibrant and varied it was, but I especially admire Ophélie's immense technical prowess. I mean, I don't even know that much about cello, so I can't say for sure how incredible it really was, but it made for incredible music and an incredible show. She also played a duet with Tiago Anjinho at the end, which was very nice too. Tonight, I went to a concert by the Off Limits Orchestra with the cello soloist Margarita Balanas. It was also great. This was the only event I watched with a friend. We also had dinner together, pizza, also fantastic. We went to an award-winning pizzeria. It was a little pricey, but holy crap was the pizza great. Anyway, the show! Fantastic. There were 2 parts, with the first being just the orchestra, which was great; my favourite part was the contrabass solo about halfway through. Just fantastic. The second part had them accompany the soloist, and that was just... Crazy. The whole show was musically very odd, as in unorthodox, jazzy and rocky rather than classical, but the first piece they played during the second half was just so freaking sick!!!! SICK, I SAY, SICK! She really rocked the hell out of that cello, let me tell you. Fantastic. She performed great, and overall it made for a fabulous experience. I do feel like my chats with my friend tonight were a little... Off. It started off fine, but then I got a bit into politics and... I guess I showed my ignorance, not that she was particularly educated, but it felt a little tense. Then we spoke some more and, yeah, it was just off. It was fine, mind you, we laughed and had fun, but it was definitely off, somehow. I don't regret having her here, especially because I got to learn of a great restaurant, but I'm not sure it was actually that great, overall. I like her a lot, and I enjoy her company, but I kind of feel like she doesn't reciprocate my enthusiasm for many things. It's frustrating! I don't know... We've been seeing each other a lot, talking a lot. Maybe we're better for each other in smaller doses. I don't know. I need more friends HAHAHA I really do. I want people that share my interests more intensely... Maybe that's impossible, I don't know. Anyway, I wore jeans, at first, but then I changed into my brown suit pants. She wore a blue dress, very beautiful. We weren't really matching at all, but it was fun to dress up. |
