The one in Nagaizumi didn't find it necessary to call theirs a park until someone from the city visited Portland. Or so local embittered Portland residents say.

In 1948 the site that would become Mill Ends Park was intended to be the site for a light pole. When the pole failed to appear and weeds sprouted in the opening, Dick Fagan, a columnist for *[The Oregon Journal](https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/mobile-html/The_Oregon_Journal "The Oregon Journal")*, planted flowers in the hole and named it after his column in the paper, "Mill Ends" (a reference to leftover irregular pieces of wood at lumber mills).

Thanks Dick Fagan!

When the pole failed to appear

What a weird way to say “when the city dropped the ball and failed to install proper safety lighting.” The pole “failing to appear” makes it sound like it was just supposed to be conjured out of the ether, all by itself.

Most of city administration is low level magic, they just don't talk about it much. How do they fit thousands of trash cans worth of trash into one truck? Teleportation, straight to the slums of Ghana. You really think bridges, huge chunks of concrete and steel, just balance naturally like that without collapsing? Levitation. All the city clerk's pens glow when ratepayers are near.

No, it's a park. A record plays music.
