Hot take: thing that has happened organically since the dawn of entertainment will continue to happen organically

Except I feel like finding funds was a bit easier then, and it creates an artificial barrier that obstructs things that should happen organically

I'm not saying it's an insightful or original post I'm just saying you interpreted it wrong. Also Star Wars and Marvel has been in my lifetime too. So that's an irrelevant point. By new they clearly meant something not already existing. Originality was clearly the entire point. They could have used Harry Potter as their example. It would not have changed their point. You're focusing too much on...

Marvel was founded in 1939

Congrats on your upcoming 90 year anniversary jubilee

To summarise: The image is predicting a new Star Wars will emerge within our lifetimes. A new Star Wars, Game of Thrones (which is an objectively newer original IP), has emerged within our lifetimes. It is not based on a 50+ year old IP. You agree with all of this. Someone (many people, in fact) then make this exact argument in the comments, but instead of agreeing with them you declare that ev...

No. I'm tearing my hair out here. Or I would be if I had any left. They're not talking about anything that was released 30 or 50 years ago. They're not talking about within our lifetimes that have already happened, also high chance they are a teenager. They're talking about within our lifetimes going forward. From the day it was posted. The entire point of the very simple-minded post is about tomorrow.

Which is why when you locked in on Star Wars, which is just an example and had nothing to do with the point of the post other than as an example of a big culturally significant ip, you were misinterpreting it. At no point were they saying nothing like it had come out since. I can't believe you've made me spend this much time on this stupid twitter post.

Ok, let's start over, since you don't seem to be getting it. Stop getting hung up on Star Wars. No shit they chose Star Wars. OP said an example of Massive IP, and put forth that there'll be a new, original one that will have been created within the last 50 years. With me so far? Someone said they didn't know why I was being down voted. You said Because those aren’t new? The examples I gave fit...

Of course it's a nothing burger! It's utterly vapid. It's a Twitter post. Someone took a Twitter post, probably made by a 19-year-old who did think this was profound because they're 19, then they slapped an engagement bait title on it and posted it to Lemmy. It's the definition of vapid.

That's what this whole thing was about. You thought they were saying nothing new of that scale had been made since Star Wars, since you still are with that 1976 thing. They weren't. They were saying something that required no brain activity.

To put it very simply. The post said something new will be made tomorrow. You said that's wrong because something new was made yesterday. I said that's why someone downvoted you. This is what we've spent brain power on. Cuz we're both apparently as stupid as the person who made the original post. I'm done.

They literally say there will be an IP that will have come out since 1976 (“and not based on 50+ year old intellectual property”). That is any IP that has or will come out since then. Such as the 90s, not exclusively one that hasn’t been thought of yet. Goddamn. And to think some people might want to discuss what might fit that criteria. But others chime in, arguing that they have issues with reading comprehension. “Ackchyually, they haven’t been thought of yet”. Cool dude.

At this point you’re just a troll.

Given what a shitshow Lord Miller made of Project Hail Mary, I am not holding out much hope for Bobiverse. I must merely content myself with the hope that, eventually, The Infinite Extent will be released in some way where I don't have to support fucking Amazon to read it. The starship in the movie was more realistic than the one in the book. You'd have to be an absolute moron to design a ship you fly with a touchscreen.

Only mostly. Obviously there are a shitton of productions studios prioritizing profit over all else, so they will always gravitate toward "safe" options like reboots and sequels and ripoffs.

But then occasionally you get a movie like Obsession, which was made for less than $1 million, and is actually reasonably unique. Or Flow, which was made for €3.5 million using open source graphics software, and is also unique.

Just because Hollywood mostly runs on regurgitated slop, doesn't mean there aren't successful movies which are more art than commercial.

I think Project Hail Mary was pretty good. Should it have been an hour longer? Absolutely, but what was in the movie was good. It did fine explaining things without the stuff it skipped.

In the movie version of PHM, things just... happen. There's no explanation for why they happen, and the entire point of the book is the process by which such mysteries are solved. It is a book about piecing together truth from first principles. Every single tension and catharsis in that book comes from using what little information grace and rocky can glean with their limited tools to divine the truth, either about grace's own journey leading up to the launch, or about the problem of the petrova line, or about stopping the taumoeba, or even the last question of how grace can survive on a planet where the entire biosphere is based on mercury and cadmium. The movie neatly severs literally every single mystery by just having the characters divine the answers, apropos of nothing, by simple guesswork. Little evidence, no reasoning, and it just works, and we are expected to clap, because they saved the day. No. It did not "do fine" with "explaining" things.

I'm sorry, your complaint is that the book's crew module had a touchscreen control system? Given how little the actual ship's systems are even touched on in the movie (let alone how little they matter, compared to those in the book), that's a bit rich. As far as astrophage being a deus-ex-machina, it is ABSOLUTELY turned into an unmitigated deus ex machina in the movie. Instead of any detail, we get several worthless minutes of Jessica Chastain singing karaoke, because that's what we were all waiting for. In the book, the precise mechanisms and rules by which astrophage operates are explored, in excruciating detail, so that the actual solution comes logically from the problem, and all of the further problems follow from secondary-school-level scientific principles. Is it convenient? Certainly, but it earns the convenience by actually using it to explain not only how the astrophage is able to do what it does with scientific reasoning, but also neatly explains how that ties into the possibility of panspermia, and has enough detail in how it functions that the only part that isn't fully and scientifically explained without any hand-waving is how the astrophage can allow the radiation through its phospholipid bilayer to get to whatever specialised organelle manages the mass-energy conversion (and, of course, the precise method of that conversion, which you would not expect any sci-fi writer to explain).

It seems you might be the type of person who complains that Tau Zero didn't give you a working schematic of an Alcubierre Drive, and thus it is "simultaneously the source and solution to all of the crew's problems"

Do you complain that Heaven's River fails to describe the chemical structure of the ceramic used to construct a million interlocking bishop rings? Because, surely, such inconsistencies, especially in other aspects of the Bobiverse such as "subspace", are likely to make you judderingly irate! I shudder to think what you would think of a movie set in the Bobiverse, especially one made by a production company that removes all scientific explanation in favour of handwaving and big CGI set pieces that aren't in the original and serve no narrative purpose. Oh wait, that was my point, wasn't it?

For anyone wanting to get into screenwriting and filmmaking, this is this is the key. An excellent story made cheaply is the way to get new IP to market. Hollywood is much more willing to take a risk when it doesn't cost them much.

Image Comics will be sometime soon. Youngblood, Spawn, they're all so amazing, I like them all so much more than marvel characters and I'm a big marvel fan. They tried spawn back in the day but I think they botched the movie pretty hard and the HBO animated series just didn't do the og content justice.

Edit: Also, DRAGONLANCE by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Can't believe Amazon picked up Wheel of Time instead of Dragonlance. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, it's a high fantasy classic dungeon and dragons story. Some call it "The DnD bible". There's a core 6 books and then 190 additional novels - I remember going into book stores and there being an entire wall of these guys. With such a huge cult following I really can't understand why this hasn't been picked up.

... And then netflix will cancel it when it takes some time to become popular and instead produce more reality competitions edited to maximize drama at the cost of a coherent understanding of how the competition is going. And even for action shots, it's like they are editing to show off how many angles they are shooting rather than selecting the best shots to show out of all the angles they have.

I agree! And the entire film felt like it had annoying background music in a lame "80's straight to VHS" movie kinda way. Or a mediocre montage of what could've been a fine movie. I think this a choice undercuts moments of work between the two of them that could've been used for the tension of figuring things out.

Then again I felt the same way about Fantastic Four: First Steps.

You think that's new?

I think, as the gap between people with lots of money and ordinary people grows bigger, things get more extreme. It was complicated to publish something in Gutenberg's time, it was complicated in 19th century, and it is complicated now, but that are very different kinds of complicated. I would guess, that there was an optimal time with least friction, and I think we're past that time.

Of course, I never tried that or researched, maybe the internet gives reach that is so wide that if something gets popular it will be noticed and get funding

I literally only listen to soundtrack music, and I could not, if you offered me a billion dollars, pick out any part of the PHM soundtrack.

Oh that sounds like a nightmare to make it work and not limit the creation of most new works. This is the first time I've heard about that. Shit people like Patrick Rothfuss wrote himself into a corner in only a couple books, attaching series is asking for stumps. Just let works be free and seperate

Yeah The Name of the Wind was supposed to be 3 or 4 books and he got through 2 and just hit a dead spot I guess. Reviews are mixed but I liked the first one. Second I think got a little weird but alright. Many didn't like it because they say the character was "good at everything no matter what" and I disagree with that because the story is a biography being written about him and he (a stage performer born to traveling circus members) is telling the story. .... So yes. The dude isn't going to say he was shit at telling left from right or math. He's going to recount everything as being through "rose tinted glasses" because that's the story he wants people to read about him.

I only read the book because of the movie. I like both, they both work to the strengths of their own mediums. And I'm sure a lot more people read and appreciate the book because the movie exists.

It's possible to have criticisms of the thing you enjoy. I also liked Bobiverse, even though bob is a boring self-insert protagonist, I appreciate that he mostly exists as a means to get from idea to idea.

Wholeheartedly agree that Bob is self-insert, and has precious few character flaws for the first several books aside from his general tendency to live vicariously through the other life forms he comes across (notably his "family" outburst with the deltans), and it isn't clear just how much his attitudes are character flaws until the fifth book, when he actually has to start facing the consequences of his own choices, in his own reflections through replicative drift and the Skippy debacle.

It's now up to six, though the sixth is currently audible-only. The fourth is, in my opinion, my favourite, and the fifth starts to explore the consequences of replicative drift and the realities of being truly immortal for a human mind.
