British Sci-fi: Threads

it's technically a docudrama. and then it gets bored.

There's also When the Wind Blows, if you want to be depressed but also want an absolute banger of a soundtrack.

When the Wind Blows is borderline optimistic compared to Watership Down.

And the American version was The Day After (1983) Entirely different movies with the same premise. The Day After messed me up as a kid. But Threads haunts me as an adult.

The Day After gets way more fucked up when you watch the roundtable discussion that took place after its premiere. Now that's some parallel reality mental prolapse.

Here you go: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4827558 Total shit. I'm posting this so you realize you actually don't need to watch more French Sci-Fi. Watch some Spanish Sci-Fi like this, this, this, this or even this instead.

Alien 4 of all things is actually pretty accurate adaptation of Metal Hurlant wacky aesthetics.

Actually, 70% of citizens identify as ethnic Russians: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_groups_in_Russia In US 60% of people identify as white. There's big population of Tatars, Chechens and bunch of other Asian ethnic groups. No idea how are they represented in Russian cinema though.

They don't. 😂

My family migrated from the Soviet Union in 1989. My mother still watches Russian media. They're all white. All of them. Ever.

Fifth Element

Ah, Luc Besson, solid if not particularly deep entertainment. Just what the doctor ordered.

We'll see about those breasts.

and the credits roll over a still frame of an toddler's penis. that movie was messed up.

Well, it's from the 80s... Other than that it's very mild when it comes to any sexual content but very funny. Best Polish Sci-Fi ever made. Not that Polish cinema is famous for it's Sci-Fi (or fantasy for that matter. anyone saw Polish The Witcher? 😂 ) but definitely worth watching.

Polish Witcher is actually better than Netflix Witcher. At least it sticks to source material... somewhat.

On the Silver Globe enters chat. it's a mess and a slog to watch at times, but gotta respect the ambition.

Um, hate to remind you but Fifth Element came out 29 years ago. Fucking Valerian adaptation is almost 10 years old already.

Still over 100 years more recent than the other one. And, incidentally, a time I still remember well. When Fifth Element came out, that is.

At one point in my life, every time I got a serious stomach flu, I would watch Threads (1984) so I could enjoy my life.

By Dawn's Early Light and The Day After are fun too.

Agreed, Polish Witcher is so bad that I was literally ROTFLing during some scenes but it still somehow had a better vibe than the one from Netflix.

Isn't most American SciFi the direct counterpart to British SciFi? Space army fights bad aliens. Space radioactive now, but bad aliens dead 👍 Space Captain hero. Also, my friend needs some examples of French SciFi.

American sci-fi goes all over the place. Look at Phillip K. Dick for instance.

That dude was on an island by himself with the insane shit he wrote

This makes the running joke from Extras where everyone would get the name of the main character's show wrong (a silly British sitcom called "when the whistle blows") even funnier

As someone who reads scifi like a chain smoker in a tobacco warehouse, this reads as somewhat antiquated. Niven and Heinlein and such back in the day, definitely in the American camp on how they wrote women and relationships, not seeing much of that lately though. Heavy lean on military scifi instead. Most of it narrated by RC Bray. Silo series was American. Though that felt like the smart man’...

Aniara is amazing! Like really, it might not be quite a typical sci-fi story but it is really good. Also so confusing, Harry Martinsson makes up soo many words. Absolutely worth reading! Also, it does not rhyme. He uses a verity different meter throughout the book, few of which rhyme. A lot is free verse. Also the first 29 songs were apparently written under trance. It is truly a very, very str...

It looks like if James Joyce lived in a slow-rotating space colony.

I can appreciate prose like that, but I personally don't like reading "challenging" things when I'm reading for pleasure.

The Valerian movie is one of those movie I just can't get over. Like, it retroactively changed my understanding of bad chemistry so fundamentally that I genuinely get confused when people say that about other movies. It shifted my ability to tell in the way adding a thousand individual 0s to a data set shifts the average.

At the same time, it every single other facet of the movie is so astoundingly good that I can't forget it, the concepts it brings are just too deep and rich in flavor to not want more from it.

In a perfect world we'd get a spoof of the production of the movie where the director is some aged Playboy uncle to Dane Dehaan and has spent a fortune and called in decades worth of favors to orchestrate the production of this movie just to put his cronically unfuckable nephew in direct contact with the actress he's obsessed with in hopes of reliving his youthful conquests vicariously through this kid who embodies all of the distasteful behaviors of that era without any of the charisma and passé that made it acceptable at the time.

Fuck... I need to watch that movie again...

Ukrainian sci-fi: Everybody just fucking dies. Nobody's fault, really. And there's meaningless but meaningful love. Also, it also functions as a very long music video for the song "Voyage Voyage", whose lyrics the author of the manuscript has clearly seen translated. (Referring here to "U Are the Universe", which I liked a lot!)

It was probably meant for people who want to fuck their sister, because those two had immense sibling energy. Unfortunately they also had immense asexual energy.

"Time Enough for Love" by Robert Heinlein 😬 about a man that, basically, can live forever.

spoiler

He and his descendants live for so long, that sex loses meaning, and becomes some sort of "adult playtime" that he, inevitably, has with his actual children. Granted, the children are also like a thousand years old at this point too, but, still.

You are correct.

I think the meme's about some popular films & TV shows and anyhow it's just a version of countless "A British, an American and a French scientist meet in a bar" jokes.

SciFi in literature is alive and kicking and just as multifaceted and nationality-defeating as ever.
