EarthBound (SNES) for me, I just never get tired of it. Its probably at least passively running in the background like 5-7 times/week

thinking grenades

Tho often with a low pass filter to make it more in the background and less granular. Its sort of the audio equivalent of thinking grenades for me

I rarely listen to soundtracks and in general I don't like listening to the same things repeatedly. I used to browse a few YT Channels to find new music, but since the AI Slop hit the feeds a lot of them have stopped posting altogether.

So, instead, I've been pulling album CD Rips from Archive.org

I've found:
Muse
Thousand Foot Krutch
Disturbed
Motionless in White
Arctic Monkeys
Gorillaz
Pierce the Veil
All American Rejects
Dido
Johnny Cash
Dolly Parton
Drowning Pool
3 Doors Down
Kasabian
Weezer
Nena
My Chemical Romance
Finger Eleven
Boy Hits Car
Rammstein
Cliff Richards
Egypt Central
Static-X

And a whole bunch of others. Up to about 8 Gb of music so far but I'll find more.

  • SNES: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Donkey Kong Country 2.
  • Artists on Bandcamp: Jake Kaufman (Shovel knight, Shantae), the 8-bit big band, Darren Korb, Joel Corelitz (Eastward game), Christopher Larkin (Hollow Knight), Lena Raine (Celeste).
  • The soundracks from the modern Zelda (BOTW and TOTK).
  • Also Metal Slug on Neo Geo, it's fun.
  • the keygen-Music-Archive (maybe on archive.org)
  • Kmart background music (also on archive.org)
  • Anime: Akira, Dragon Ball, City Hunter (I'm fucking old), Metropolis
  • TV shows: Twin Peaks, Severance

I find everything I need on Soulseek in the FLAC format (with the Nicotine+ client), and I compress it in Opus which gives me best quality for a very low space. You should try that if you're looking for obscure artists or albums.

Horizon: Forbidden West is my all time favorite OST. Also love Horizon: Zero Dawn, Clair Obsure: Expedition 33, Nier Automota and a bunch of the Assassin's Creed ones.

Bear with me, cause it’s attached to a game that’s not very good, but Unlimited Saga.

This is Masashi Hamauzu at his best. In particular, the highlights are “Time-Space Travels,” “Enigmatic Scheme,” and “Battle Theme I.”

He’s just got a really lush chord progression and thoughtful instrumentation. If you want to hear more of his modern day work, check out his pieces “Costiera Amalfitana” and “Giant,” those two are amazing as well.

A mix of Silent Hill and RE9 music got me through grad school. I think my favorite SH OST is the original but I definitely like 2's and 3's also

Those aren’t really soundtracks, that’s just music.

This is mine too. The movie hasn’t aged as well, but that soundtrack will always be 🔥

"Aleksander" and "Collider" songs from Adam Lastiwka (Canadian-born composer), both OST for the Travellers TV series. When it comes to game OST, I used to listen a lot to RuneScape songs in the past, especially those played during Dungeoneering missions.!nostupidquestions@lemmy.ca

I'm very bad at hoarding and acoustics but here is my reasoning:

  1. WAV and FLAC are both too big for me, my hard drive space is limited, and it would be better to have a compressed audio format with good quality. I don't care about transcoding, all I want is to store stuff that I can listen to without a hassle.
  2. MPEG 2 died a hundred years ago, MP3 is dead too since the 2000s, MP4 could be an alternative but I'd rather have something more open.
  3. OggVorbis is open and a good idea, but it was too boring to gain momentum.
  4. Opus is an improvement to OggVorbis, and even if it is still "experimental/beta," it may be what I'm looking for (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Opus_bitrate+latency_comparison.svg). It is open-source, and has no patents or weird stuff.

So, is Opus good for me? According to a lot of web pages (e.g. https://audioutils.com/blog/opus-bitrate-guide), "At 128 kbps stereo, Opus is effectively transparent in ABX testing," and "At 192 kbps stereo, Opus exceeds what virtually all listeners can detect as different from lossless source."

That's why I chose Opus 192 kbps for all my music. The sound is "almost" perfect, my shitty ears will never hear the difference with a good FLAC file, I can store it on a server and copy the files to my phone without additional tools. And the files have the same size as the MP4 format with better quality.

All I need is: download the FLAC on Soulseek or Bandcamp, compress the files with the opus tools, clean the tags with https://picard.musicbrainz.org/, and store the result on both a hard drive and my phone.

Earthbound is one I listen to often as well, but I also love Jet Grind Radio and Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst. I think the only movie OST I've actually listened to are Ghibli ones and usually just a few tracks, not the entire albums.
