People are gonna ignore this, then complain that “no one warned them about this” or “why didn’t you try harder warning us”

Been running Lineage OS for a few years on older pixel phones but decided to grab a Pixel Fold off of eBay and going to load Graphene onto it.

What percentage of Android users sideload? I would think an enthusiastic minority who are well aware of the deadline.

That is not accurate at all, not enough people use custom roms.

Which 4 countries?

It's not called "sideloading", by the way, it's called installing software on your own computer.

I'm still not comfortable degoogling my software by googling my hardware.

according to Google, you can enable an "advanced mode" that lets you keep using other software: https://piefed.world/post/1386916#comment_6826604

(not sure what will happen in that 24 hours waiting period)

But sideloading makes it sound so ominous and even dangerous.

If you listen very carefully, you might hear me sighing deeply at the level of stupidity we all have to live in.

That is the same line of argument as "I have nothing to hide, of course you can surveil me 24/7".

You never have, until you have, when things change against your way.

Besides this was the ONLY benefit of going google so far, having "freedom". And now they strip it away, step by step. 10yrs from now it's buying apple or this-other-slightly-cheaper-apple.

I keep trying to do this but keep forgetting after the 24hr I need to go back and verify. Somewhere along the lines it kills it and I have to start a new 24hr wait time

I think the problem is that even when people agree with you there is no specific term for installing apps in the way that will be limited other than the term "sideloading"

So its kinda hard to communicate clearly without using it. But the plays into googles dichotomy between installing the way they want and installing the way they don't

I'm not saying that sideloading isn't important (sent from LineageOS).

I'm just saying that the population of people who currently sideload and don't know about the deadline must be small.

If you're arguing that the population who will want to sideload will grow after the deadline to encompass a large plurality, that's another topic.

The pessimist in me doesn't see it happening given how many kids don't even know what a file browser does.

One can hope though.

population of people who currently sideload and don’t know about the deadline must be small

Oh yes totally. Misunderstood you there. This number is probably extremely small indeed.

If you’re arguing that the population who will want to sideload will grow after the deadline to encompass a large plurality

Sadly no. I'm with you there. Won't happen. And I'm also sure, that google's warn-notices will make sure to make it sound horribly bad like "You cannot install this app because it is not secure, the risk to your device is immeasurable, it might even shrink your penis!".
Pessimism? Nah, would say realism. That's what always happen. Grab enough people with being open and great and cheap and caring, and when you secured a sizable portion of the market, cut the liberal shit out and control the thing to death. Normal enshittification of everything :-(

Hope yes, that's what rather puts us into the optimism-spectrum...But what do they say? An optimist is just someone who has not enough data :-)

Yea, unfortunately all of every system requires some level of trust and I’m giving a big boy like Google a lot of trust their hardware is secure. But let’s say Google is clean, their schematics and chipsets are all vetted and stuff. There’s an additional layer at the fabrication of the hardware. Do you trust the Chinese hardware makers? If not then basically all devices are compromised. Need to trust the driver vendors, need to trust your ISP, need to trust your Os vendor, so on ad infinitum.

I’m also trusting the Graphene OS devs that they’ve done their due dilligence and ensure their hardened product is up to their marketing specs. I don’t think I possess any such knowledge to know 99% of this. I could take wireshark and profile its baseline data and make some assumptions, but what if all telemetry is just stored somewhere local and like on the leap year, the code fires it all off to homebase? I’m not likely scanning and analyzing 100% of the time so like it takes trust.

Stop using the term "sideloading", as if it was something bad.

It's just installing apps. Google will restrict installing apps and force users to only install the apps that they want you to install.

Same. I'm on a pixel phone with grapheneos. I like it a lot, but i really don't like the fact that it runs on google hardware. I'm side eying the bew Motorola lineup, but i don't want to spend over 1k on a phone.

Just got a Fairphone 6 with CalyxOS.

Bank app works (in seperate user profile, fucking scanning bullshit) and the other verification apps seem to be working like steam too (even though they say on their site that steam does not work).

The vast majority if my apps are FDroid anyway

I got a FF4 earlier this year and put Calyx on it too, its great. I have a browser and a few things from fdroid or termux. Plus I won't install any restaurant apps, its great!

And is completely correct. They are heavily restricting installation of software to only software they approve of through package managers they approve of.

Isn't it already restricted in those four countries? We need to pushback harder so the restrictions apply not to four countries, but rather to zero.

Bank app works

The real problem here is that there is no guarantee that will remain so.

I finally managed to remember mine. It only gave me 24hr after the initial 24hr wait to finalize it no wonder I kept missing it. And having to click through like half a dozen scare warnings and all that AGAIN this is ridiculous

I am a long time Samsung user, always rooted but obviously not fully degoogled, simply because I like the hardware. I have downloaded and backed up the firmware, ready to be patched for a rooted install at any moment if I would ever need to factory reset. I realize that rooting isn't a realistic solution for most users, but for those that it is, it makes your device "unofficial" or "unsupported" or whatever and as for Samsung specifically, as long as you don't upgrade from One UI 7 and you have a European model, your bootloader will remain unlockable.

As for apps, I get everything from the source with Obtainium, except for my state issued electronic ID, a paid music player and a banking app, which I get from the Play Store, which I only unfreeze and unblock when I intentionally update.

I also have an old Galaxy Note 9, on which I run Lineage OS, but it just sits there, just in case.
