Clearly we need to age verification even harder, how dare those children try and form social connections /s I gotta say keeping away from those for profit big tech algorithmic nightmares and finding small semi private places to connect, this might be a kludgy but effective compromise. |

Someone just needs to start a social network that doesn’t ask for age and doesn’t become profitable ;) |

Certainly better than the big blinking sign that says, Hey, pedes, the children are all right here like at Club Penguin and Roblox. |

In sum, kids couldn't use tiktok or other apps because the parents blocked them, but could use Spotify. After a kid's podcast was blocked, they wanted to keep the conversation going so they created playlists called "chat here" that linked to podcasts with few comments (to avoid real comments getting mixed up). My thought was mostly that I used MSN, ICQ and AIM back when I was their age... why aren't chat services like that not an option? Oh right, I guess that'd be WhatsApp or Discord in 2026, which is also kinda dubious. |

because MSN messenger is largely bust. I saw a retro ass video on it recently, and I saw it auto launch when I installed XP in a VM in an attempt to get Sims 2 to work |

Didn't they add a chat function to the regular Spotify app? Why wouldn't they just use that? |

Every time there's something like age verification or something involving stopping teenagers doing something, I keep trying to tell the people who think it's a good idea that it won't work because teenagers are crafty. Everyone seems to ignore that, because we grossly underestimate the intelligence and craftiness of the average teenager, clearly forgetting how crafty we were as teenagers. |

Oh I'm aware, I meant analogous software. I don't think AIM or ICQ are still functioning, are they? Although a quick check suggests ICQ both shutdown and somehow isn't, so I have no idea. Lol |

Necessity is the mother of invention. Before long, they'll be self-hosting chat apps. Or, figuring out eepsites. Or running Mastadon on Tor. |

Ella's and the others' parents ought to be proud their kids are so resourceful, and apparently used the secret chat harmlessly. Hannah's parents should be proud their kid their kid not only figured it out but stood up to their fuddy-duddy old bosses and proved they were right. Probably none of those things will happen. But Ira and Dave should promote Hannah. |

To be clear, this is a good thing: New generation's should be finding creative solutions to building a community rather than inheriting one controlled by a 40 year old billionaire with every incentive to continue manipulating their behavior in ways that don't align with their self interest |

I feel like app based messaging would be problematic because just putting the app on the phone or computer would be an issue for locked down phones. |

AIM is gone, I was actually there when the servers shut down! Signal or telegram I think would be the closest to an AIM-like experience, but I've never seen or heard of any children using them. |

Yeah personally I'm kind of, like, impressed. I keep hearing that kids these days are so used to frictionless devices that they have no problem-solving skills whatsoever when it comes to tech, but, today's kids actually aren't that different than yesterday's. |

Idk about you personally, but I reckon most people here who were online in the 2000s were doing so mostly without supervision. It didn't take much skill to avoid filters, shoulder-surfers, upstream blocks. We weren't geniuses to do that either. All the smart kids I meet figure out what's to access the raw web without permission or filters. It didn't stop us, and it won't stop them. |

Agreed, there are a ton of options out there for social media that aren't algorithmically-weighted. They could even make their own page easily on Neocities. |

One thing is that in early days they hadn't really sorted out the full potential of manipulating online interactions yet. So we got to enjoy connection with relatively less active manipulation. |

It really is amazing that given how long humans have been around that so many of the older ones have yet to learn that the one thing that will for sure make the younger ones want to do something, and find creative ways to do it, is to try and prevent them from doing it. Hell, it is not even necessarily just young people. Look at the lengths prisoners go to in an effort to get around jailhouse restrictions. Nothing makes people willing to find a way to do something like telling them they "can't do it". Spite is a powerful motivator. |

reminds me when I built a star wars themed website in the mid to late 90s on Geocities and I wanted a forum but I didn't know how to make a php forum (nor had I anywhere to host it) so I found this defunct Star Wars forum and kinda just hijacked it and linked to it from my site and made threads on there. Kids are smart. they'll find a work around for just about anything. Age verification doesn't work except when it comes to the companies that thirst for the data it provides. |

The motivations of kids are generally pretty obvious - most parents know exactly what it is their kids are wanting to do. And kids will work to accomplish that motivation despite what roadblocks the parents put in place, and at somepoint they will figure out a strategy to remain undetected. Parents don't really get a vote WRT their kids having sex or doing drugs. They get |

There were just as many kids yesterday that can't handle tech issues as there are today. I can only think that people that believe differently clearly don't work on any sort of technical support roles at places with a variety of worker ages. When you see the gamut of retirement age employees down to 18 year olds and everyone is calling for simple things all the time, the age stuff is a bit ridiculous. |

I think it's just that it isn't as obvious that they will be clueless. It used to be that you had people that used tech and/or the internet and people who didn't. Now you have people who have been online for a decade+ but have never gone more than two clicks from Facebook/Discord/etc. They are really no different from the no-computerites two generations ago and the no-internetites last generation. |
