Kids are ingenious.

I had a Dreamcast when they released but my parents didn't want me to have the web browser disk in my room (I was a teenager).

I noticed that some menus in some online games look suspiciously like a web page. As it turns out some of the online games shipped with a lite version of the browser which was used for account maintenance stuff (I think it was an MMO, e: Phantasy Star Online a commenter pointed out below, but it's been a while) but you couldn't access the address bar so it seemed like it wasn't very useful.

I eventually discoveted that if you found the Help -> About screen with the lite browser open there was a link to the official forums.

On the official forums, I searched the comments until I found a Google link and once I had a Google search bar, I didn't need the address bar anymore.

I only used these powers for good. (I was a teenager)

AIM is gone, I was actually there when the servers shut down! Signal or telegram I think would be the closest to an AIM-like experience, but I've never seen or heard of any children using them.

In the eleven years I've been on signal, I've only been able to successfully get 4 people to consistently use signal. I'm the only person they talk to. One person may have stuck around and got his friends on it but I don't communicate with him much to know.

I was able to get a group chat at a place I worked at. But from what I can tell, none of them are you using it anymore. I don't get it. The most simple and secure app in the world and nobody gives a shit.

I heard this TAL the other day, and thought it was a repeat of an old episode. I'm surprised to learn that it wasn't, and wonder where I originally heard about this phenomenon. Probably on some other podcast, I imagine, but I can't recall which.

There were just as many kids yesterday that can't handle tech issues as there are today. I can only think that people that believe differently clearly don't work on any sort of technical support roles at places with a variety of worker ages. When you see the gamut of retirement age employees down to 18 year olds and everyone is calling for simple things all the time, the age stuff is a bit ridiculous.

Yep, the only difference is the speed people can understand and follow instructions, which goes down with age. But technical affinity is not age related.

I actually got everyone i know to using signal, because i am simply not reachable by other messengers. That made these people use signal to chat with each other, which in turn made parts of their friend network join - it was interesting to see the "network effect" occurring on a small scale.

It's like the $GME apes using the comment section of the Gangnam Style video on YouTube as their message board whenever reddit goes down. The next time reddit goes down, check it out, it's pretty funny.

How would I know if reddit goes down? They wont let me even view old.reddit without an account. Its over, and reddit was the one who ended it.

In high school we had the old imacs running macOS 9. Some accounts had the web browser icons removed for the crime of observing tits on a CRT. Those guys figured out if you open PowerPoint you can abuse it into opening Internet explorer for you, no need for at ease’s cooperation.

Simpler times with similarly motivated teenagers.

To be clear, this is a good thing: New generation's should be finding creative solutions to building a community rather than inheriting one controlled by a 40 year old billionaire with every incentive to continue manipulating their behavior in ways that don't align with their self interest

Hacking shit (in the original meaning of the word: "making something do what it wasn't originally meant to do") is how us older folk started going down the path of making Tech (not to be confused with mindless Tech followers) in the first place.

You see a similar learning effect with modding.

Idk about you personally, but I reckon most people here who were online in the 2000s were doing so mostly without supervision. It didn't take much skill to avoid filters, shoulder-surfers, upstream blocks. We weren't geniuses to do that either. All the smart kids I meet figure out what's to access the raw web without permission or filters. It didn't stop us, and it won't stop them.

Also the kids who figure it out will tell other kids how to do it, if only for the kudos and brag factor.

Unlike in the "walled garden" shit that the Internet has turned into nowadays, in the non-digital world and original internet people just talk to each other without the surveillance, content bots or algorithmic experience shapers.

The mods let you get away with murder on here for the most part... is propaganda just stuff you disagree with generally?

Ironically your instance lemmy.world is one of the instances more tighthly controlled to stay on message with the United States political view, with even one of its bigger forum moderators there being openly a Zionist and is source of a ton of pro-Liberal (US-style Liberal rather than more leftwing interpretations of it such as Social Democracy) messaging (still today a lot of people go around hammering the "Kamala would've been better" key on the Genocide even though she was openly an unwavering supporter of Israel plus in a World scale of politics she's barelly to the left of Trump mainly differing in that Trump wants Fascism at home and abroad whilst she wants the Fascism to stay abroad).

Hell, back when I had a lemmy.world account one of the admins even leaked my registration e-mail to Israel and I started getting "learn about Israel" e-mails on it IN MY NATIVE LANGUAGE.

Not that I disagree with you when it comes to most lemmy instances, it's just that lemmy.world along with the tankie instances is very much "shaped" and controlled, though in a more "modern western propaganda" style rather than the heavy handed ban hammer way favored by the tankies.

I can totally understand how the previous poster reached their conclusion about Lemmy even if I disagree that it applies to Lemmy in general.

Back in my day we used IRC.

When I was in my youth there was always an adult involved in running/paying for the IRC or Forum. They need to figure out how to host an IRC server with the resources available. This whole centralized service non-sense really fucked the internet up.

Oh I'm aware, I meant analogous software. I don't think AIM or ICQ are still functioning, are they? Although a quick check suggests ICQ both shutdown and somehow isn't, so I have no idea. Lol

ICQ went tits up not so long ago. I tried getting access to my old account but couldn't. It was operated by a Russian company in the end which also had some other chat service. The users got rolled into that one.

Yeah, that sounds about right. It was neat to have an MMO on a console but paying a subscription wasn't in the cards... the disc was pretty useful.

Kids are fairly locked down on their school computers. Connecting to an irc server via some random URL is almost certainly blocked.

If they aren't on school computers then they probably have a phone anyway

We were little shits in high school, I have lots of these.

There was a time (Windows 98ish?) where you could just type a URL into the Explorer window (the thing that opened when you clicked My Computer) and it would transform into Internet Explorer.

We used Word and ran VBscript statements in the 'immediate' window. They completely ignored a lot of group policy restrictions around launching other applications.

Network discovery was disabled, but if you knew the machine's name then you could connect to shares directly via the UNC path.

Cisco donated 20 PCs to our school to teach their CCNA course. The course only used the lab about an hour a day so that lab was empty most of the time and at the end of a hallway that nobody had reason to walk down. My last 2 years of high school we loaded those PCs down with games (Starcraft, Total Annihilation, Unreal Tournament, Worms, Diablo 2) and we would skip class and use our lunch time to LAN party in the cisco lab.

We were almost busted once when one of the guys used 'the tricks' in the Library to run Unreal Tournament off of our lab's network share on several of the 'Internet computers' which, for obvious reasons, faced the libearians desk. Everyone played dumb so they didn't know WHO did it, but we (the MTG nerd group) were questioned and sacrificed a blank CD-R with "Unreal Tournament" written on it to appease the librarians.

Teachers, by procedure, stored their grades in spreadsheets on floppy disks on their teacher PC. Well, if you know the PC name (which was just the 'room number-teach') you could access the drives on the PC via adminstrative shares (//server/A$). That kept us from having attendance issues at least (🤫)

We had a 120GB (a lot at the time) file server where we'd pool the fruits of our piracy and all 20 PCs had fast Lite-on CD-RW drives so we were all selling burned CDs. We couldn't do DVDs but movies on piracy sites were often xvid encoded tuned to be just small enough to fit on a CD-R (650MB, I think).

So anyway, I went into cybersecurity

The original. I played the GameCube version. There was a separate menu in the game that let you setup the Internet connection in order to play online.

I do remember being able to access the web browser through some tricky steps when setting up the billing. There wasn’t an address bar anywhere on the UI by default but some combination of forward/back revealed it. Not all websites were supported on this stripped-down browser but it was fascinating.

Wow dude if you think Kamala would have been worse on Gaza you gotta be smoking fucking CRACK. Everything else you said completely ignored. Kamala had no intention on invading iran and throwing half the middle east into death and chaos. Like she cantsupport isreal and not get us into a war. this is the dumbest shit ive read on here. Kamala would have undoubtedly been better. It would have been the status quo of the biden admin, not a fucking regional conflict. She wouldnt have had isreal marching her around on an old republican grudge match thats for sure. Your telling me either you think kamala would have invaded iran, or that iran escalation is unrelated to the genocide. Which one before i put you on a block list for that commically stupid opinion.

Kamala would have done nothing to aid in the genocide. I'll give you that much, that much is fair. You've got blinders on a lot of death and destruction that would not have happened if it wasnt for that trash opinion.

I hold people who hold that opinion personally responsible for the additional deaths across the middle east, the audacity to look at all this unneeded death and say oh ya it was would have been just as bad either way.... i truly hope its guilt causing that cognitive dissonance man.

One of my students figured out that, while in the old formative lockdown browser, they could get past the Chromebook parental controls by clicking on one the links to the formative website, then navigating from there, all without logging in to the computer, because the kiosk lockdown app was in the app waffle on the login screen.

He used it to read the manga for the Eminence in Shadow, and while I'm normally a narc as a teacher, when someone so cleverly follows all the rules, and has done all of my work, I respect the hustle. I just made sure that he had a seat against a wall so he didn't bother other students.
