I had a few myself as I was still playing Lego back then. What I liked most, after building the kit following the instructions, was to create my own mixing all the parts I had. I wonder how many hours I spend doing that :) |

Must have been nice growing up rich... In my friend group there was only one who actually got one of those for Christmas (I think it must have been the Galaxy Explorer, I remember the cool cockpit and the specific moon baseplate). For a time he was the star of afternoon play meetings, as no one else had something remotely comparable. For the rest of my friend circle those all were dreams while reading the mail order catalogues... |

I admit, these look pretty lame compared to the 90's Spyrius sets from my childhood.

Going off-script is absolutely the best part of Legos, Erector Sets, Lincoln Logs, and any and all other building toys. Kids learn to explore and imagine new things, not just to duplicate what someone else already imagined. I will die on this hill. |

Back when Lego was simple and the only limit was your imagination. (Of which we had a lot back in 1980.) |

I agree 100%, I would buy them again. And hang them by fishing line from my ceiling again :) |

Having no screens helped a bunch! Every stick was a sword or a gun, building forts, digging holes (one of my favorite past times as a kid), playing army, BMX bikes. I am so glad I grew up in the 80's |

Off script was the BEST! I would build the kit per the instructions, play with it for a bit, then the deconstruction would begin. First what can I build w/ just the kit, then the tub of bricks was put into play to build a monstrosity! |

Were Lego super expensive in Germany? No shade just curious as an American. EDIT: I also come from a big extended family, so they would pool the Lego kits for Bdays/Xmas. I only wanted Lego, it was the only toy I played with. |

I don't know, maybe it's just because I was born in one of the not so wealthy rural areas. |

I don't know, maybe it's just because I was born in one of the not so wealthy rural areas. But the bigger Lego sets definitely were in the Mercedes-equivalent range of toys. So you might have gotten one for Christmas, but you wouldn't have gotten much else that year...
I understand. Also my dad was an engineer so I could get him onboard with buying me sets every so often because we would build together. The rest of the time we built anything together it involved a soldering gun. But considering I bet you appreciated those sets like no other kid on planet Earth at the time :) |

We will, if you don't mind company, as I 100% agree on the importance of that. |

I don’t think they will since there are so many licensed Star Wars sets. Can’t compete with themselves and Disney. Space = Star Wars in the Lego world now |

And the music! And the movies! And computers were new and fascinating and awe-inspiring and full of unfathomable possibilities. Great times. |

My dad had the Beta-1 Command Base (6970) and also a yellow astronaut minifig? They've all since been absorbed into the family lego collection. |

Oh I remember the day MTV was launched, whole neighborhood was in my living room. We had the biggest TV on the block so it was the place for boxing/sports/etc. and your right the movies, what happened to low budget movies being shown on Saturday manatee's??? Now if it doesn't cost 300 million you can forget seeing a real movie theater. |
