True, but sharing does not necessarily mean equal parts of all task areas. Financial burdens, home care, chores, child raising, pet care, emotional burdens... there are a lot of things that go into having a relationship with someone that you share a home with, it can be complicated, and it's not always "fair". If one partner handles all of the accounting and tax filing, is that worth doing dish...

I think doing your fair share is a trick position. It sounds right, and it's technically right, but when you focus on it you can easily be led astray from achieving it. Focusing on trying to balance needs, wants, responsibilities, and capacity is better.

If one partners' capacity is reduced due to illness or a depressive episode the answer isn't necessarily to have the other partner take on everything, it's to reevaluate what needs to be done with the capacity that's shared. Dinners might start leaning towards pasta with jarred sauce and the home may get messier because some rest for the more capable partner may very well be a bigger need than more complicated and varied meals or than keeping everything vacuumed as often.

And in this vein, especially starting out if your partner can't or won't carry their own weight (ie meet their own needs) it's a sign to ask yourself if the added responsibilities they'd impose on you are worth it.

Risotto isn't something I usually cook, maybe I should try it sometime. I don't normally stir rice when cooking it anyway. Currently got very cheap white rice which can be a little sticky compared to the basmati rice I usually cook with, but its not a massive problem.

Its a great way to make some broth and random veggies into something very tasty. I like to do mushroom with soy sauce and miso but lots of stuff works

German festival every November in Bew Braunfels, Texas Oh man, I was expecting a town in Germany and nearly broke my brain trying to pronounce "Bew Braunfels" in German. Then I read the "Texas". 😅

It's actually "New Braunfels", but as a native Texan, just about everyone I know pronounces it "New Braunsvul", for some reason.

Hey I'll clean and be my GF/Wife's best friend but I just don't give much of a fuck about cooking. I'll still do it, and funnily enough doing it for other people after I've already eaten sounds fine. But I despise cooking for myself and I'm really mediocre at it.

I fucked up a meal so bad thinking I was doing good, I literally didn't have to cook for the first decade of my marriage. We've been happily married for over 21 years now, I think the best friend and always wanting her to have the best life she could helped the most.

Took many years but I did eventually realize the best thing might in fact be the thing she suggests over the logical answer, but people really can get better with time.

I never understood why I should be jealous as a polyamorous person. Like I also get to bang other people. There's literally nothing to be jealous of

Exactly! Plus if someone vibes with both of us... We can share the love all around. It's win-win.

This is quite a male take. Women don't really complain about this and it isn't anywhere near comparable to not helping with housework. Besides, we need to normalize talking about competent partners. So many women I know are in terrible relationships because they've convinced themselves that all men are awful.

I was being as sarcastic as the cartoon itself, unless I was wrong and some women do lament not having enough to complain about. /s (there, now you know I'm being sarcastic again)

I mean you're 100% right. Downvoters are just haters. This comic isn't about the husband making her a social pariah through competence, it's that she's bad at socializing and reading the room. Mostly the women complaining are just looking at having their feelings validated, you don't need to share your own story to do that. If you're asked to share a story you pick one that fits the theme. That...

Also venting is healthy... People forget that your spouse is also your roommate and it's normal to have things you dislike about your roommate. Why wouldn't it be normal to have things you don't like about your spouse?

This is just immediately obvious to 99% of adults in long term relationships. There's something about critically online 20-somethings that think disliking anything about your spouse makes you an asshole

I remember seeing here on Lemmy a while back that a good boyfriend/girlfriend is a best friend where there is also an erotic angle.

To me that's friends with benefits.
A partner is more than that, there's a connection beyond friendship+sex, but that's me.

I work in IT. Every time more than a handful of IT folks get together the talk always turns towards how shitty their wives are/were before the divorce. Or the wife is framed as someone who keeps them from buying tech stuff ("I'd like to upgrade my homelab, but the purchasing department keeps turning me down! Har har"). I'm just sitting here with a lovely wife who trusts me to spend money on wha...

how shitty their wives are/were before the divorce.

Why did they marry them then?
